What a weekend at the Sydney Branch Champs! Our Wanda athletes absolutely smashed it.

From early mornings to nail-biting finishes, everyone gave it their all on the sand and in the water. Beach, water, boats, R&R, surfing, lifesaving competitions, and nippers — our members’ involvement across all surf sports really shows the depth and spirit of Wanda.

Huge shout-out to our March Past team for taking 1st place for the fourth year in a row — what a proud Wanda tradition!

Massive thanks to all the athletes, coaches, officials, supporters, and volunteers — from water safety and IRB crews to first aid, BBQ helpers, and patrols. And a special mention to our amazing Auxiliary committee for keeping everyone well fed — those salad rolls are legendary!

Wanda spirit, teamwork, and determination on full display — we couldn’t be prouder!

Our Nipper Captains, Tilly Teasel and Jordan Prince, were both finalists in the Junior Lifesaver of the Year awards presented at the Branch Champs today — an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the leadership, commitment and values they bring to our club.

Massive congratulations to Jordan who was named Male Junior Lifesaver of the Year. So well deserved. Jordan consistently leads by example, and sets the standard both on the beach and around our younger members. His quiet confidence, and the respect he shows others, make him an exceptional role model and a credit to his family and our club.

We are incredibly proud of both Tilly and Jordan. They are wonderful examples of the impressive young leaders we are developing in our club.

Japanese Lifesavers Visit Wanda

We’re incredibly proud of the long and meaningful friendship between Wanda SLSC and our lifesaving friends from Japan, particularly Yugawara Life Saving Club — our sister club that proudly shares our colours. This special relationship began in the 1970s, when Japanese lifesavers first came to Wanda to learn lifesaving skills, marking the start of an enduring partnership spanning decades.

Our much-loved Patron Emeritus, Ernest “Solly” Stephens OAM, was the driving force behind this exchange. Solly regularly hosted and trained young Japanese lifesavers for extended periods and also took young Wanda members on tours of Japan, helping to build and strengthen lifesaving skills internationally.

It was a joy to welcome visitors from Japan to Wanda last weekend to learn more about our Nipper program. What a special experience it was for these young lifesavers to meet Solly — a true icon — and connect with the remarkable legacy he has created. We captured some precious moments of Solly reminiscing with these young lifesavers from Yugawara, Hasaki and Minamiizu.

Moments like these remind us of the global reach of lifesaving and the friendships that truly sit at the heart of our club.

NEXT GEN CHAMPION: DANE SUTTON

Huge congratulations to Wanda young gun Dane Sutton on winning the Next Gen Series at Miami Beach over the weekend.

After three days of racing in very challenging surf, Dane finished on top of the leaderboard by a clear margin — an outstanding performance built on years of hard work, focus and commitment.

With just one qualification spot available, Dane seized his opportunity and secured his place in the 2026/27 Shaw and Partners Iron Series, fulfilling a lifelong dream to compete in the toughest surf sports series in the world.

An incredibly exciting achievement for a 17-year-old, and we can’t wait to cheer him on in the red singlet in next year’s series.

Congratulations also to Wanda's Otis Jessop, Jayden Beaumont and Mikaela Mead, who finished 7th, 9th and 16th respectively — fantastic results from all 3 in a high-quality field.

Wanda is incredibly proud.

The Australia Day weekend was action-packed for Wanda.

It delivered fabulous results across the board and was a powerful example of the depth we have right across every discipline of surf sports.

From boats, March Past and R&R flying the flag at Collaroy, to our beach and water competitors taking on the Shaw and Partners Ocean Series at Maroochydore; from the Jane McGrath Classic, the Greg Alderson Cup and Beach Stormers highlighting our 2km running talent here at Wanda and down the beach at North Cronulla, to our nipper and senior athletes competing at the Australia Day Ironperson — Wanda was everywhere.

It’s almost impossible to capture all the action from a single weekend, but there were truly terrific performances and results right across the club. With major carnivals fast approaching, it’s an exciting time to be wearing Wanda colours.

Wanda at its best — showcasing the full breadth of what we do!
