Associate Professors Julieann Coombes and Mei Ling Yap had the privilege of speaking on a panel at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Annual Conference.

Together they spoke about building cultural capability and safety in cancer care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, drawing on experiences in Cancer services, Southwestern Sydney Local Health District.

The session was led by Janine Mohamed, former TGI Distinguished Fellow, who continues to inspire important conversations about equity and culturally safe care.

Together, we can make cancer care more equitable, connected and healing.

For generations, Indigenous women have led the way in caring for Country, community, and future generations.

Jane Sloane, Keziah Bennett-Brook, and Laura Downey remind us all that true climate solutions must start here, with Indigenous leadership, women’s voices, and knowledge that connects health, land and life.

It’s time for climate action that listens.
That shares power.
That honours the wisdom of women and the strength of community.

Last week we had the absolute pleasure of hosting our wonderful friends from .trauma.injury and here on beautiful Badjigal Country.

Our capacity sharing day was all about sharing knowledge and strengthening relationships.

We spent the day yarning through four deadly sessions, navigating the academy, postgraduate research, understanding ethics and grant hunger games, each filled with incredible insights and laughter!

These moments remind us that capacity building is about more than knowledge, it’s about relationships, respect, and walking alongside each other on this journey. 🖤💛❤️

At the recent NSW Health First 2000 Days Symposium, Ty Madden and Melissa McDonnell presented on the Sydney Local Health District’s ‘Healthy Homes and Neighbourhoods’ integrated care initiative.

A session that Anitha Thiraviarajah (PhD student), whose abstract was accepted for presentation, was unable to present on the day.

They shared how Indigenous methodologies were used to evaluate ‘Healthy Homes and Neighbourhoods’ which has 30% of participating families identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

The evaluation used a strengths-based, culturally safe approach, grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing.

This work highlights the power of collaboration, equity and culturally informed care.

Amazing work to you all! 👏🏾

Jacek recently presented on the development of Bundi: a housing tool for mob, at the National Housing Conference in Boorloo (Perth).

Bundi is a Dharawal word meaning weapon or tool. The social housing system is complex to navigate and Bundi is one pathway to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander public and community housing tenants in South-East Sydney.
The free housing information resource was developed in partnership with Aboriginal community members connected to La Perouse - particularly Dharawal Elder and Aboriginal Health Worker Aunty Lola Ryan - and frontline tenant advocates and social housing workers. It provides clear repairs and maintenance information and escalation pathways, from complaints and appeals to Tribunal.

It was a privilege for Jacek to share the process of developing the resource in a concurrent session on Delivering culturally responsive housing at .

Aunty Lola unfortunately was unable to attend however attendees could hear her speak to the impact of the resource on a pre-recorded video.

The housing information resource can be found here: https://www.georgeinstitute.org/our-research/research-projects/housing-home-and-health-social-housi…

Julieann, Ty, and Annalise recently visited 🎓 to deliver a Community and Public Health Nutrition Workshop for first-year Nutrition and Dietetics students🍎

We supported students with a practice run using the CREATE tool to help prepare them for their upcoming assignments. The room was full of energy, curiosity, and thoughtful questions, it was a beautiful afternoon of learning and sharing 🌿📚

It’s always deadly to see students so eager to learn how to engage respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in their future work.

We’ve previously run Yarning Workshops with this class, and it’s great to see the ongoing enthusiasm and commitment to culturally safe practice 🤝🏾❤️

Thanks for having us again, 🙏🏾

Aliyah Palu, our incredible Research Assistant and PhD candidate, recently travelled to Fiji 🇫🇯 to attend the 2025 Pacific Islands Health Research Symposium (PIHRS).

Aliyah presented on the important topic: “How are Pacific Islanders in Australia considered in diet related policy?” and absolutely smashed it! 👏🏾

We’re so proud to share that she was awarded Best Presentation in Health Systems & Policy at PIHRS! 🎉🎖️

Vinaka vakalevu to the organisers, and huge congratulations to Aliyah for representing our team and community with such passion and excellence.
