We are buoyed to see the DriveSafe DriveAware screening tool identified as the leader amongst 56 cognitive assessments or batteries in a pivotal scoping review published in Disability and Rehabilitation this month. The study examines how cognitive clinical assessments can predict performance in on-road driving evaluations and concluded that "Only four (of the 56) met predefined psychometric standards, and of these, only DriveSafe DriveAware also met clinical utility criteria."

Importantly, three widely used, global cognitive assessments did not meet psychometric criteria for accuracy in predicting the outcome of an on-road driving assessment:

- the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)
- the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
- Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination-revised (ACE-R)

Our Director Beth recently represented Occupational Therapy Australia in the launch of the 'Vehicle Safety for Older Drivers and Passengers' guidelines. These guidelines were co-developed by researchers from Transurban Road Safety Centre at NeuRA, The George Institute and Occupational Therapy Australia.

Older people are over represented in crash statistics. Chest injuries are the most common among older drivers who die or are hospitalised in car crashes. These guidelines provide clear and actionable advice to health and road safety professionals who provide advice to older drivers about safe travel in vehicles.

Japan has the largest elderly population in the world. Approximately 23% of Japanese drivers are aged 65+, with around half of all motor vehicle driver fatalities being among this group. Japan has addressed this challenge by requiring drivers aged 70+ to attend classroom sessions and driver training as a prerequisite to license renewal. Drivers aged 75+ are also required to undergo cognitive testing. In May this year, Japan opened its first elderly driving centre - designed to deliver 180 cognitive tests a day.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/06/10/japan/saitama-senior-drivers-training-center . Japan is aiming to increase the safety of all older drivers by delivering road safety programs to all seniors.

Drivers 70 and older have to undergo sessions consisting of driving instruction and classroom lectures, as well as cognitive tests.
