Jannette’s annual eye test revealed something she never expected – macular disease. Because it was picked up early, she started treatment straight away and her vision has stabilised.

Her story is a powerful reminder: regular eye checks can make all the difference.

“Over the last 60 years I have watched

my mother and grandmother in their daily struggle to cope with loss of sight with dry macular degeneration. My decision to include Macular Disease Foundation in my Will has brought me great peace of mind. It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction that my legacy will help others in the future.” – Mary, NSW

This Christmas, like Mary, leave a gift of hope for the 1.9 million Australians living with macular disease and their families.

This Christmas, give the gift of sight for generations to come.

Through the many stories shared by our supporters, we understand the impact a diagnosis of macular disease can have on people’s independence, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

By leaving a gift in your Will – or bequest, to Macular Disease Foundation, you can help fund vital research, support services, and education programs, for generations to come.

A second new treatment for geographic atrophy (dry AMD) – brand name Izervay®, active ingredient avacincaptad pegol – was registered this December by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for people with geographic atrophy, whose vision is threatened by the progression of their condition.

The treatment is not currently listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). However, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC), the advisory body that recommends the listing of medicines on the PBS, will consider avacincaptad pegol for PBS-listing at its meeting in March next year.

If you would like to have your say about the PBS listing of avacincaptad pegol, you can participate in the public consultation.

The PBAC welcomes input from patients, carers, health professionals, consumer groups and members of the public on medicines submitted for PBAC consideration. The PBAC includes these public consultation inputs when considering the clinical and economic evidence presented by the manufacturer of the treatment.

The public consultation online survey for avacincaptad pegol can be accessed here: https://ohta-consultations.health.gov.au/ohta/pbac-march-2026/consultation/subpage.2021-08-13.1345934449/

If you would like to send a letter via email, you can download a hard copy of the consultation survey at the weblink above, and email it to: commentsPBAC@health.gov.au

The deadline for all submissions is 21 January 2026.

As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA), Dr Sushma Anand is working at the cutting edge of vision science to develop new treatments for retinal diseases that currently have no cure – including Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel) and Stargardt disease.

For people slowly losing their sight, her research offers hope: the possibility of preserving or even regaining vision.

Dr Anand and her team are exploring how exosomes – tiny, naturally occurring “delivery vehicles” – can transport medicines and genes directly to the cells in the eye that need them most.
