To get people back into life with the provision of world-class social care services and supports
Welcome to The Co-operative Life. You may not know it, but you are reading about a co-operative. There are not many social or community care services providers in Australia that are co-operatives, however, not to discourage TCL is one of the first. So why did the co-founders decide on to become a co-operative? There are two reasons…
The first is historical. The Co-operative Life exists today because of the extraordinary vision and values of its co-founders, Robyn Kaczmarek and Margaret Ciarka. They believed in a ‘democracy, freedom and ownership’, where the employees share knowledge, power and profit, as a better form of business. This vision was set out in a written Model Rules or Constitution in July 2013 – as a framework to define the Co-operative’s objectives and the way it should operate. The Model Rules has been revised since then, to keep it fresh and up to date. Nonetheless, the latest edition is a direct connection to the original inspiration – it defines what we are.
The second looks forward. The challenge for The Co-operative Life today is to prove that a business which is not driven by the demands of outside shareholders and which sets high standards of behaviour can flourish in the competitive conditions facing a modern community social care business. Our Model Rules provides the Objectives and Rules within which we aim to demonstrate, that employee ownership, customers and profit, that we are a better form of business.
Our enduring purpose is identified on our logo – ‘to get you back into life’. We believe this goes for both our customers and for the employees of The Co-operative Life. It identifies that the ‘prosperity of all’ relies on our ability to provide “Secure and well-resourced employment, training and ownership opportunities for workers engaged in the delivery of care, therapeutic and allied services”. To achieve this, we aim to give all employee-members a relevant, consistent and rewarding experience during their career, and for the we can guarantee we will deal honestly with them to secure their loyalty and trust by providing outstanding choice, value and service – or as our vision states – world class social care service to all Australians.
