Happy Wednesday 💙 A cancellation this morning, after a ladies sports massage, was a sign that I was meant to go to the beach:-) it’s cool and breezy and beautiful nonetheless and a great workout for my feet as I’m walking barefoot.

I do have some availability late morning tomorrow (Thursday at any start time between 1045 and 1145) and then one last November spot available on 24 November. Cancellations to happen so feel free to let me know if you want me to text if i get a cancellation .

When last did you walk barefooton the beach? Can you recognise which beach I’m at?

11/11 at 11am - Lest we Forget.
On Remembrance Day we remember those who have died and suffered in wars. In particular I always remember my grandfather who was a World War II veteran and whose suitcase is in the Massage studio.

Here is his story. His name was Phil…

“Phil and Wally were 18 and 21 years old when war broke out. They were well known local sportsmen, playing soccer and cricket, besides which Phil was a swimming champion and was All Surrey Schools baackstroke champion. Phil taught Eric to play cricket in the back garden and when he was very small he used to cry because he couldnt get it right. At the bottom of the long garden there was a railway line where the coal wagons used to be parked and their cat would sun himself on top of the coal. Once he disappeared for some months and returned in a bedraggled state so the train must have moved off with him fast asleep on board.
Wally and Phil had joined the Territorial Army before the war which meant that when war was declared they were called up right away. When they left to go the the station - about half a mile away- all the neighbours marched with them to see them off. They were sent to a training camp and from there were sent to North Africa to drive tanks in the battle against Rommel. During one of these battles Phil's tank was hit and his crew were wounded although he was not. Phil tried to find some stretcher bearers or medical help but although he crawled some long way through the bullets and the battle he could find no-one to help them, so he returned to his stricken tank. He looked after the wounded until they were captured and was then sent to a prisoner of war camp in Italy. At home the parents were told Phil was "missing" so they feared the worst for about three months till news came that he was a prisoner.

After a while the Italians withdrew from the war. They opened the gates of the camp and told all the men to leave. They had no food or money so decided to keep off the main roads and scavenge for food whilst they tried to rejoin the British or American army. One night they waited till it was dark before going down to a lake to get some water but the Germans were waiting for them and recaptured them. They were marched to Germany to a prisoner of war camp where they spent their days breaking up rocks in a quarry. They were poorly fed so all became very thin and malnourished. After a long time, the guards were told that the American army was on the way so the prisoners were marched off in the direction of Russia. One day they were resting against a low wall a little way away from the guards when they were approached by a German civilian. He told them that over the wall and across the fields were the Americans if they wanted to run for it. They all decided to jump over the wall and run like mad towards the American Army and fortunately the guards did not fire at them. They waved their arms and yelled and yelled and the Americans took them in and fed and clothed them and made a big fuss of them. They were later brought home.”

Many thanks to my mum for tracking down the story a number of years ago via her aunt. And for great aunt Margaret who wrote the email to my mum with this family history.

In a world where it seems that people have forgotten the lessons of the past it is important to remember them so it’s not to repeat them.

Every family has a story - have you shared yours with your children?

On Friday night I was privileged to be a guest of our daughter at Customs house in Brisbane, we were there to celebrate her achieving a full Blues award from the University of Queensland. She is in her final year of a mathematics and finance degree.

“Since 1912, Blue and Half Blue Awards have been presented to champion UQ sportsmen and women, in recognition of their outstanding sporting achievements, and for enhancing the reputation of university sport.

To be awarded a University Blue is held in high esteem and is one of the highest accolades a student-athlete can receive”

I love that strength and sporting ability are celebrated. I remember being a teenager on my exercise bicycle and being told by our lovely domestic worker, “ Robyn you have such big strong legs” I hated the fact that my legs were big because being a young woman in the 1990s meant that having skinny legs was the most attractive and anything big and strong was to be avoided at all costs.

I love that my daughter has grown up in a different world - a world where having muscles and being strong is something to be celebrated. I am so glad that I have changed my attitude towards strength not to being skinny and as woman it is important to work on our strength, particularly as we age.

Here is celebrating strong women - May we be them and raise our daughters not only to be strong physically but mentally too.

Happy Friday and happy Halloween💚 I’m not a massive fan of Halloween - especially all the fake spiderwebs that are put on people’s plants and damage the local wildlife and birds. I literally want to rip it off and have to restrain myself.

Throwback Thursday 🧡 there’s nothing like going through old photos to discover that some things never change…

We all carry a history with us of things we did and things we l loved as a child. I do remember as a child being with my sister and tickling my mum’s back and playing with her hair while she was pregnant with our youngest sister.🙂
