Meet Arkan Yousef – UTS graduate, community volunteer, and a remarkable symbol of resilience, lifelong learning, and service. Born in Iraq, Arkan arrived in Sydney in 2006 and now proudly calls Australia home. He is a carer for his elderly parents and 2 disabled sisters, and speaks 3 languages, with English being his third. Arkan is also totally blind, but that has never stopped him from pursuing his passion for mathematics and helping others.
At age 64, he began his Master of Philosophy in Science (Mathematical and Statistical Modelling) at UTS: University of Technology Sydney, proving that age, disability, and circumstance are never barriers to ambition.
Guided by 3 principles – challenge, inspire others to reach higher, ignite trust – Arkan defies assumptions about disability, inspires students and educators alike, and builds confidence in others through his faith and determination.
Outside the classroom, Arkan is a tireless volunteer:
- Teaching mathematics in Arabic, English, and Chaldean to migrant students.
- Supporting blind individuals with adaptive technology.
- Visiting aged care residents weekly to spread hope and love.
His dedication has earned him numerous awards, including finalist for Blind Australian of the Year 2022, the Vision Australia Award 2025, and the Pride of Australia Award 2013.
‘UTS gave me an amazing opportunity, and I didn’t waste it. I only wish more students could have the same opportunity,’ says Arkan.
We’re proud to celebrate Arkan and to highlight UTS as an inclusive university where learners of all backgrounds can thrive.
