A shared love for gardening blossoms at Joslin Manor Care Community 🌸

Residents Meg and Dean have transformed our garden into a vibrant oasis. Together, they've created 'The People's Garden' - a favourite spot for residents to relax, connect, and enjoy the blooms and greenery. 🌻

Gardening has always been a part of their lives. Meg grew up in a family of gardeners, and for Dean, a former farmer, working the land has always been second nature.

"It gives me a sense of purpose every day. Working hand in hand with Dean here makes it even more special," says Meg.

Dean adds, “Gardening inspires me. Seeing the results of my work reminds me that I’m living, contributing, and still enjoying life to the fullest.”

Honouring Remembrance Day 🌺

Our residents at Malvern East Horizons Care Community took a trip to the Royal Australian Air Force Museum in Point Cook to reflect on 100 years of Air Force history.

They were captivated by a live presentation of a WWII-era Tiger Moth plane and loved exploring the hangars filled with restored Air Force vehicles.

What made the day even more special? Our tour guide had a personal connection to both the museum and the Air Force, which brought the stories to life in such a heartfelt way.

Back at our Care Community, other residents gathered for a moving service, with the Last Post played, followed by a minute of silence at 11am.

A day of reflection, remembrance, and connection. 💙

♻️ It’s National Recycling Week! ♻️

Across our Care Communities, we're embracing the challenge to reduce waste and make a positive impact - and at Bethania Parklands Care Community, our residents and team are proudly doing their part.

Together, they've collected 1,294 cans and bottles - and counting!

Each month, they hop on the bus to Containers for Change Bethania, where they help unload the containers and collect the funds.

Our residents are now planning how to spend our recycling rewards, with a trip to Beenleigh Historical Village topping the wish list.

🌟 What started as a simple sustainability effort has grown into a fun community challenge, with residents guessing how many containers they’ll collect each month.

It’s the small actions that can make a meaningful difference. 💚

🌟Celebrating a gem in our community🌟

For nearly a decade, Peter has been a source of connection, companionship, and joy for our residents at Ashmore Gardens Care Community.

As a proud member of the Salvation Army, Peter is cherished by residents and team members. Whether he’s spending time in our memory care neighbourhood, leading uplifting church services, or lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed, Peter’s presence lights up the room.✨

“He’s so good to our residents, and I know they all look forward to singing and joining in fun activities with him,” says team member Anita.

And the impact goes both ways. “I feel a part of the community, and they give back so much more than I offer,” he shares.

Thank you, Peter, for your dedication and the warmth you bring to our Care Community. 💛

The Riverside Post Office – Delivering Daily Joy 💌

A culture of care and companionship is part of everyday life at Warrnambool Riverside Care Community – and now, thanks to our very own Riverside Post Office, there’s even more to smile about.

Lovingly planned over many months by our GM Peter, this cheerful little hub was created to encourage connection, purpose, and special moments for our residents.

Whether it’s a friendly note to a neighbour, a treasured photo from a friend, or mail from a loved one, each delivery brings excitement and a spark of curiosity. For residents who aren’t able to visit the Post Office themselves, their meaningful mate is always nearby to lend a hand.

Residents are also invited to join in – helping to write, sort, and deliver mail alongside our team members.

Our Post Office is a lovely reminder that even the smallest gesture can spark a meaningful interaction, create a sense of belonging, and show us all how powerful kindness can be.💙

🌍 World Food Day is a global call to action to end hunger, promote healthy diets, and build sustainable food systems. One of the biggest challenges is food waste. Did you know that in Australia, we waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food every year, much of which ends up in landfill?

At Opal HealthCare, we’re committed to actively improving how we divert food waste away from landfill - without compromising the size, quality or enjoyment of meals for our residents.

In 2024, we ran a food waste diversion pilot at two NSW Care Communities to identify opportunities to improve our impact on the environment. What we learned is helping us take practical changes to better manage food waste and drive change at other Care Communities too.

And this is just the beginning. We’re working on more exciting projects to support sustainable waste practices across Opal HealthCare and help reduce our environmental footprint. ♻️

Bright shirts, big laughs, and even bigger hearts - meet our Men’s Mob at Alfred Cove Care Community. 🧡

Every Thursday, our residents come together to build, banter, and bond over shared passions and projects.

Men’s Mob is all about inclusivity and connection, a spirit that extends beyond Alfred Cove, with residents from Applecross Shore and Melville Parkside Care Communities joining the fun each month.

It’s more than mateship – as resident John puts it, “It’s honour, brotherhood, love, and a better tomorrow.”

Dementia Action Week: Nobody Can Do It Alone 💙

An estimated 433,300 Australians are living with dementia. For those diagnosed - and their families, friends, and carers - it can be difficult to know how to connect and communicate in meaningful ways.

At Opal HealthCare, we’re committed to building understanding around dementia through real stories and practical support. Here are some of the ways we’re making a difference:

💬 Cuppa Q&A’s – Our video and podcast series where families and partners share personal experiences of becoming caregivers. Many of these stories reflect the impact of dementia on loved ones.
🤝 Dementia Care Connections – A free monthly webinar series offering tools, insights, and practical strategies to help people better understand dementia and engage with those living with it.
☕ Dementia Connections Cafes – Informal meetups for families and significant others to network, share experiences, and reflect on the education from our community outreach program.

If you're looking for support or want to learn more about how to better connect with someone living with dementia, join our free Dementia Care Connections webinars - everyone is welcome.
