The Osseointegration Group of Australia provides a team approach to assist amputees with the possibility of greater and more effortless mobility using the newest innovation in the field of prosthetics, the OGAP-OPL. Through osseointegration surgery Dr Munjed Al Muderis and The Osseointegration Group of Australia provide above and below knee amputees with a leg replacement using the OGAP-OPL implant which is designed to be a close to the human anatomy as possible. The surgery involves an implant being inserted into an amputee’s femur or tibia which, when integrated with the bone allows for a simple, quick, safe connection between the stump and the lower prosthesis. Osseointegration surgery provides amputees with greater mobility, comfort and quality of life.

Amputation level can be a common worry for individuals when considering osseointegration.

Osseointegration is suitable for both above-knee and below-knee amputees. Above-knee amputees may have issues with stability and mobility due to having a short femur. The bone-anchored prosthesis can improve function, stability and mobility and increase a patient's physical activity once again.

Can you hike with osseointegration? Yes, you can.

Osseointegration can help improve function, stability and mobility compared to a socket prosthesis. This may help to improve physical activity, such as long walks and hiking.

Osseoperception – the sense which allows individuals to feel the ground beneath them and the location of their limbs – may allow patients to find it easier to adjust to different surfaces and limb movements.

Can you swim with osseointegration? Yes, you can.

Swimming in saltwater is recommended as it can help aid the healing process. Swimming is just an example of all the physical activities and exercises patients have been able to return to since receiving osseointegration.

It is important to speak to your surgeon and clinic team once your wound has healed, before attempting to swim. You should also ensure you continue to exercise good hygiene around your stoma by rinsing with soap and clean water, and following other hygiene protocols advised by your clinical team.

It is advised not to swim in lakes, rivers, or chlorinated public swimming pools, as this can increase the risk for infection.

It is important to maintain proper hygiene after undergoing osseointegration. This is to ensure you minimise the risk of infection and complications post-surgery.

Protecting your implant requires simple care. This includes cleaning around your stoma with soap and clean water, and swimming in saltwater to aid the healing process. You should not swim in lakes, rivers or chlorinated swimming pools for at least one year after receiving osseointegration.
Taking these steps and maintaining good hygiene habits means you can continue to enjoy your bone-anchored prosthesis.
