The Osseointegration Group of Australia provides a team approach to assist amputees with the possibility of greater and more effortless mobility using the newest innovation in the field of prosthetics, the OGAP-OPL. Through osseointegration surgery Dr Munjed Al Muderis and The Osseointegration Group of Australia provide above and below knee amputees with a leg replacement using the OGAP-OPL implant which is designed to be a close to the human anatomy as possible. The surgery involves an implant being inserted into an amputee’s femur or tibia which, when integrated with the bone allows for a simple, quick, safe connection between the stump and the lower prosthesis. Osseointegration surgery provides amputees with greater mobility, comfort and quality of life.

Osseoperception is one of the key differences people may notice after osseointegration. Osseoperception is a sense which allows people to be aware of their movements and the location of their limbs.

Traditional socket prosthetics may limit a person’s judgement of limb positioning, movement and force exertion. This may affect movement control, balance and limb function.

Osseointegration may allow patients to regain their ability to feel the ground beneath them as they walk, and differentiate between different surfaces such as concrete, grass or sand. This can help lead to safer and more confident movements, particularly in unfamiliar areas or areas with limited lighting.

A closer look at failsafe mechanisms on the OPL CC Connector

During a recent live prosthetist training session, Christopher Hoyt demonstrated how the OPL CC Connector’s built-in failsafe mechanisms function in real-world scenarios. He presented two patient cases where these safety systems were activated during unexpected incidents, successfully protecting both the implant and surrounding bone from potential damage.

These engineered safeguards are a key part of OPL’s commitment to patient safety, ensuring that in the event of a trip or fall, the connector releases appropriately to prevent excessive force being transferred to the implant.

The story of Steven Doolan, presented by the Ten Journey Initiative.

Steven Doolan is an above-knee amputee who suffered injuries whilst serving in the armed forces. He suffered from excessive sweating and could not walk for long periods of time.

Steven was determined to be able to work again and spend more meaningful time with his kids, and with the help of the Ten Journey Initiative, presented by and in partnership with , Steven was able to undergo osseointegration. This is a bone-anchored prosthesis solution in which a titanium implant is integrated into the bone, and the prosthesis is connected via a clamp connector.

We are excited to continue to follow Steven’s journey and wish him all the best.

Swimming with Osseointegration

Prof. Al Muderis shares that patients are generally encouraged to swim in clean, salted water around 3 to 4 weeks after undergoing osseointegration. However, for chlorinated pools, he recommends waiting at least 12 months to allow the stoma to fully stabilise and reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

Osseointegration is designed to improve mobility for suitable amputees by creating a direct, bone-anchored connection between the residual limb and the prosthesis.

By removing the socket, many patients experience fewer socket-related limitations, such as skin irritation, sweating, movement within the socket, and reduced control. With a stable connection to the skeleton, patients may find walking feels more natural and predictable, particularly on uneven ground, stairs, and during longer periods of wear.

Linda’s Osseo Story

Linda shares how shortly after undergoing osseointegration, she travelled to Bali and took extra precautions by wrapping her leg in plastic while showering due to concerns about water quality. Fortunately, she experienced no issues during her trip, and now, 10 years later, she continues to enjoy life with minimal complications or infections since her osseointegration procedure.

Independence looks different for everyone, but long-term function and confidence are what many amputees are ultimately working toward.

Osseointegration is a bone-anchored prosthetic option that removes the socket by connecting the prosthesis directly to a titanium implant fixed within the bone. For some patients, this can help reduce common socket-related issues such as skin breakdown, sweating, and discomfort, while improving day-to-day control and mobility.

Suitability depends on individual factors and requires a full specialist assessment.
If you would like to learn more about osseointegration and whether it may be an option for you, please send us a direct message or email to enquiry@osseointegration.org
