🏥 After working with healthcare organisations across Australia, I’ve learned this: authority is fragile. One careless message can weaken years of trust.

“I don’t want to introduce you. You tell me why you’re sitting here.”
“I’m still in the process… it’s not finished yet.”

That’s how my first through 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗢𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 started, with someone still living through the experience.

This is what the 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 actually looks like, not something completed, but something unfolding in real time, with ongoing decisions, uncertainty, and weight.

It shifts how we think about in healthcare, because information is not being received in a calm moment, it’s happening during stress, uncertainty, and vulnerability.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 explores what 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 feels like in moments of 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆, and 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 in .

𝗧𝗘𝗡 𝗬𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗦 𝗢𝗡, I still think about this project.

Between 2015 and 2016, I sat behind the camera, and later in the editing room, to help shape a documentary around the IDEAS Van: the Indigenous and Screening mobile clinic.

We travelled across Australia, mostly through northern Queensland, following the team as they brought , , and retinal imaging services directly to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Some of those communities sit hundreds of kilometres from the nearest eye specialist. The Van was designed around a simple principle:

𝗜𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵, 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲.

Diabetes-related vision loss is one of the most causes of , but prevention depends on timely access to screening and follow-up. Mobile models like the IDEAS Van exist to close that access gap, particularly in regional and remote settings where distance, transport, and continuity of care often sit in the way of early detection.

From a perspective, the brief was straightforward, tell the story honestly, show the work without overstating it, and let the voices carry the weight.

From a personal perspective, it reshaped how I think about communication. Social impact storytelling is not about hype. It is about clarity, respect, and letting the work speak for itself.

Projects like IDEAS remind me why considered visual matters in healthcare, not to promise outcomes, but to make the work visible, the access possible, and the conversation better informed.

What do you think matters most when communicating healthcare access to communities who have historically had less of it?
