May we all continue to orient towards hope and guidance to locate those safe harbours ๐Ÿ’™

Artwork- North Star, 2019, Ginger Graziano

And a thank you to ARAS (Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism) for their โ€˜Art in a Time of Global Crisisโ€™ contributions.

The artistsโ€™ notes-
North Star was painted last year before the pandemic struck, prior to the current global turmoil and consequent struggles to locate a moral compass. At that time, I was thinking about the state of our Earth with climate disruption and the need for humanity to come together with some agreement about how to address the crises.

Above, the light of the moon has been eclipsed but within its circle shines the North Star, critical for navigation in earlier times by sailors and travelers to find their way in unknown territory. This dependable star, a point of orientation, represents hope and a direction to guide us through the darkness to find a safe harbor. The jumbled letters in the sky offer a message that we are trying to translate. Especially given recent events, the upward looking figures convey hope that we can continue searching for guidance and a language to express new unfolding realities.
Ginger Graziano, Asheville, NC

A lot of people are wondering why they are responding to the pandemic and itโ€™s impacts in the unique ways that they are. We are all having very normal human responses to these extraordinary circumstances.

Thanks to Trauma & Co for detailing a range of these responses.

It can be easy to get lost in thought. In this episode, we talk to meditation teacher Tara Brach about how practicing mindfulness through the "RAIN" technique can help you sit with big feelings.

Many people in our community have found the recent bush fire events distressing or emotionally challenging. People may be feeling shock, numbness, fear, sorrow, confusion, anger and helplessness. People may feel anxious, on-guard and easily irritated. We can experience responses in our physical body such as tensions, increased heart rate and shortness of breath.

Distressing thoughts, feelings and sensations after such events are natural responses to the experience, and not a sign of personal weakness.

We can support these responses to naturally subside with time through connection with people who care about us, and looking after our physical and emotional well-being. Talking about our experiences in ways that allow us to feel emotions without being overwhelmed by them can be helpful.

There are free and confidential services (24/7) available to provide support to people impacted by the bushfires as we have been here:
Beyond Blue NSW - 1300 224 636
Lifeline - 13 11 14
Mensline AU - 1300 78 99 78
Headspace (Teens) - 1800 650 890
Kids Helpline (Children) - 1800 55 1800

Beyond Blue have published a handy resource including common reactions to bush fire exposure, and support options for individuals as well as for parents managing children's reactions to these experiences https://www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/bushfires-and-mental-health/

We encourage you to reach out for support,

Important to share far and wide. There are also many trauma trained counsellors and therapists around the place who are willing to do some pro bono work with RFS fire fighters and their families, and anyone else impacted by the bushfires in any way.

Now that some of us are physically safe, it is the emotional well-being of our communities that is the priority.

Even when we are going through the most challenging of times, we are not alone... some thoughts by Jack Kornfield

One of the most difficult things about hard times is that we often feel that we are going through them alone. But we are not alone. In fact, your life itself is only possible because of the thousands of generations before you, survivors who have carried the lamp of humanity through difficult times f...

Interoception is the process by which we perceive our bodily states. Interoception is an often unrealised superpower ๐Ÿง  in healing and being at ease in our world. Being able to notice and be with our bodily states is integral to resourcing, integrating stress or trauma, and supporting our experience of safety, connectedness and resilience.

Hereโ€™s to savouring all of our lightness ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’™

This week I noticed physical relief and lightness of spirit when I realised I had additional time to finalise an important task. When we are lugging around stress and suppressed emotion in our physiology, we may not notice itโ€™s impact or weightiness until it is released.

Thank you Project Happiness for the pic.

Hereโ€™s to awareness of the actions, thoughts, feelings and sensations that reinforce ways that now serve us. A little Tara Brach wisdom for this week ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Whatever you think or do regularly becomes a habit, a strongly conditioned pathway in the brain. The more you think about what can go wrong, the more your mind is primed to anticipate trouble. The more you lash out in anger, the more your body and mind are geared toward aggression. The more you think about how you might help others, the more your mind and heart are inclined to be generous. Just as weight lifting builds muscles, the way you direct your attention can strengthen anxiety, hostility, and addiction, or it can lead you to healing and awakening. -True Refuge
