The Australian red meat industry says the Federal Government has badly let the sector down, signing an extremely disappointing free trade deal with the European Union that falls far short of what Australia needed and expected.

Australia’s red meat industry is devastated that the Federal Government signed an FTA that falls well short of delivering a significant increase in market access, despite repeatedly indicating it would not sign a bad deal.

While the incremental increase in quota access has been noted, the outcome is well below the Australian Government’s own objectives, let alone stakeholder expectations.

The manager of one of Australia’s biggest saleyards said sound preparation of sheep and cattle ahead of transport to saleyards delivers better returns.

Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets Manager Harry Brennan shared his top tips for sending stock to saleyards:
πŸš› If cattle are travelling long distances (2hr+) send them in a couple of days in advance – they can rest, hydrate, eat and adjust to the environment before the sale.
⚠️ Don’t push loading density guidelines – you risk losing animals.
πŸ‘ Don’t send woolly sheep when its wet – they get too heavy
☘️ Don’t load animals straight off lush green feed – feed dry hay or a mix in the yards before you load.
βœ… Only load animals fit for the entire journey
