THE WITCHING HOUR (or Hours)

The witching hour is the time when your baby becomes extremely fussy and impossible to soothe (sounds fun).

During this time your baby may experience the following:

1. fussiness
2. crying
3. unable to settle to sleep or short catnaps
4. cluster feeding
5. clinginess
6. unable to soothe

The witching hour can occur as early as 5pm in the evening to 11pm at night. It usually starts from around 3/4 weeks peaking between 6/8 weeks and subsiding by 12 weeks.

It can be tough but there are some things you can do to help during these intense periods of fusiness.

1. Fresh air - get out and go for a walk (even if it is just around your backyard)
2. White noise - I love white noise, it can be a great help when you have tried everything to calm your baby
3. Bath time - move bathtime earlier if they are getting unsettled to try and soothe them.
4. Skin to Skin - the sound of your heartbeat and your warmth is particularly soothing to your newborn.
5. Baby Carrier - can be a great help if your baby is particularly clingy or you have another child to tend too.
6. Support - This is the most important, take turns with your partner so no one gets burnt out. Talk to friends and family remember it takes a village.

Trust me I have been there with two babies of my own it is tough but it gets so much better.

STANDING IN THE COT

Around 7-8 months your baby may learn a very important skill which is Standing. However this usually means they also learn to stand in the cot. So how do you handle this new development.

1. Make sure that the cot is safe and lower to the lowest setting.
2. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE - give your baby plenty of time during their wake windows to practice and show off their new skill.
3. Encourage your baby to lay down in the cot, soothing from the mattress and not from above.

If you are struggling with this development (queue the 8 month sleep regression) visit www.resteasymumma.com for more tips or to book in for a free 15 min consult.

ACTIVE SLEEP

What is active sleep?

Like all humans babies experience sleep cycles, like REM sleep in adults newborns have a period of active sleep during their early development.

During active sleep your baby will move, grunt, cry out, make a lot of noise and even open their eyes....but they are definitely asleep.

Often parents will mistake this for a baby waking in the night and automatically reach to pick them up for comfort, however this can cause you to actually wake your baby.

So what do you do?
Take a minute, watch, listen and decide if you actually need to tend to your baby.

If you are experiencing any sleep issues or need to discuss some concerns or have your questions answered book in for a free 15 min consult at www.resteasymumma.com

2 to 1 Nap Transition -

This can be a tricky transition to make as it requires your little one to be able to handle a significant awake period. Most babies will transition to 1 nap between 12 - 18 months, with such a varied window of when this will happen here are some signs to look for:

1. Nap Resistance or Nap Refusal
2. Early Rising
3. Short Naps (in particular waking from their second nap early)
4. Late Bedtime to accommodate two naps
5. Frequent Night waking

If you notice a significant shift in your little ones sleep before 12 months, don't drop to 1 nap too soon, they are likely not 100% ready and likely need some adjustment to their wake windows.

If you are having trouble with the transition book in for a free 15 min consult at www.resteasymumma.com

😴 Daycare and Sleep 😴

What do you do about sleep when your little one starts daycare.

Starting daycare is typically a big adjustment to their overall routine, this includes sleep.

There may be some teething issues initially when your little starts daycare and their sleep environment changes, know and trust that they will adapt.

Take what you can get, if they only have an hour nap take and adjust their evening. Have an earlier bedtime on the daycare days, especially in the beginning. Daycare days are filled with lots of stimulation.

Don't stress, you can't control it you just have to roll with it.

But be sure to communicate with the educators, discuss how your little one likes to go to sleep, if they have a favourite comforter or dummy.

A false start at bedtime occurs when your baby wakes 30 - 50 mins after their bedtime.

4 common reasons for false starts:
1. Your baby is under 3 months of age (if you are putting them to bed prior to 8pm) babies under 3 months typically have a biological bedtime closer to 8-9pm

2. The wake window before bed needs adjusting. If your baby is overtired or undertired this can affect their ability to link their sleep cycles at night.

3. Your baby falls asleep during their bedtime feed, this will likely cause your baby to wake up to finish the feed.

4. Your day is starting to late. Most little ones need the day to last between 12 - 13 hours (this includes naps). If your little one is waking around 8am and you are trying for a 6:30/7pm bed it may be a little too early.

So how to do you fix false starts? look at your routine and make adjustments where you need too.

If you are struggling to break the false start cycle comment below!

😴 3 to 2 Nap Transition 😴

This would have to be the easiest of all the nap transitions. If you baby is ready the transition is usually a smooth one.

Between 6 -8 Months your baby will typically be ready to drop from 3 to 2 naps (usually a short morning and a longer afternoon nap). I recommend waiting until your baby is showing 1 or more signs they are ready consistently for 1 to 2 weeks.

Signs your baby is ready to drop the 3rd nap may include Night waking, short naps, protesting or refusing naps (especially the 3rd nap), early rising or you are needing to have a later bedtime to fit in the 3rd nap.

To drop the nap, gradually increase the wake windows until the 3rd nap is no longer needed or pratical, be consistent and adjust bedtime as needed.

As always if you need any support with transitioning naps or your sleep routine in general visit www.resteasymumma.com to book in for a free 15 min consult.

💫 Self Settling 💫

With my first born he struggled to self settle and I never taught him how to do it until he was much older as I thought it meant letting him “Cry it Out”.

But teaching self settling doesn’t have to involve leaving your baby to cry alone in their cot.

If you are struggling with getting your baby to sleep or with self settling and want to learn some gentle techniques reach out for a consultation today. Link in bio

IS YOU BABY WAKING AND FEEDING MORE AT NIGHT?

Is your baby over 4 months and still waking for a few feeds overnight and starting to drink less during the day?

They may be stuck in what is called a reverse cycle.

This is where they are getting most of their calories at night and then wanting to sleep more during the day.

This can be frustrating (and exhausting) for parents.

If you are struggling with reverse cycling visit our website www.resteasymumma.com and book in for a free 15 minute consult.
