THE WITCHING HOUR (or Hours)
The witching hour is the time when your baby becomes extremely fussy and impossible to soothe (sounds fun).
During this time your baby may experience the following:
1. fussiness
2. crying
3. unable to settle to sleep or short catnaps
4. cluster feeding
5. clinginess
6. unable to soothe
The witching hour can occur as early as 5pm in the evening to 11pm at night. It usually starts from around 3/4 weeks peaking between 6/8 weeks and subsiding by 12 weeks.
It can be tough but there are some things you can do to help during these intense periods of fusiness.
1. Fresh air - get out and go for a walk (even if it is just around your backyard)
2. White noise - I love white noise, it can be a great help when you have tried everything to calm your baby
3. Bath time - move bathtime earlier if they are getting unsettled to try and soothe them.
4. Skin to Skin - the sound of your heartbeat and your warmth is particularly soothing to your newborn.
5. Baby Carrier - can be a great help if your baby is particularly clingy or you have another child to tend too.
6. Support - This is the most important, take turns with your partner so no one gets burnt out. Talk to friends and family remember it takes a village.
Trust me I have been there with two babies of my own it is tough but it gets so much better.
