Why are people with psychosocial disability missing out? 🔍

Data from the Australian Psychosocial Alliance’s new Access Denied report shows people with psychosocial disability:
🟡 have decreasing rates of success when applying for and accessing NDIS support
🟡 experience lower overall satisfaction with the NDIS compared to other cohorts.

One Door Mental Health and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for a resolution of access issues for people with psychosocial disability, a new government-led working group, the creation of a dedicated psychosocial pathway within the NDIS, and an uplift of psychosocial disability capabilities within the NDIA.

What is psychosocial disability? 🤔

Many experts, reviews and reports have stated that assessment of psychosocial disability is more difficult and complex to determine than for other disabilities.

What we do know is that determining psychosocial disability is not a "tick box" process - it requires specialist expertise and knowledge about the relationship between mental health conditions and psychosocial disability.

Unfortunately, this capability is currently missing and the success rate for people with psychosocial disability attempting to access the NDIS is plummeting.

One Door Mental Health and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for the creation of a dedicated psychosocial pathway within the NDIS, and an uplift of psychosocial disability capabilities and understanding within the NDIA.

The Mental Health Forum & Expo at Camden Civic Centre, hosted by Rotary Club of Camden, was a powerful way to close Mental Health Month NSW.

Around 150 attendees, including TAFE students and older residents came to learn about local mental health services, many for the first time. One Door Mental Health’s South West Sydney team hosted a welcoming stall, offering resources and support.

Speakers Daniel Kowalski, Dee Raquel Joma, and Professor Michael Sawyer shared personal and professional insights that deeply resonated with the audience. We were also honoured to welcome special guests Sally Quinnell MP, Member for Camden, and Camden Mayor Therese Fedeli, whose presence reinforced the importance of community-led mental health advocacy.

A heartfelt thank you to Rotary Camden’s President Andrew Ellis and Treasurer Stephen Humphreys, strong advocates for mental health reform and proud supporters of One Door Mental Health.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

It’s time for change! 🗣

NDIS access has dramatically reduced for people with psychosocial disability over recent years.

People with psychosocial disability who need support have a right to access the NDIS. That right, and their access, is currently being wrongly denied.

As it stands, NDIA policy and process changes are disproportionately and negatively affecting people with psychosocial disability, and the NDIA itself lacks understanding, expertise and focus when it comes to psychosocial disability.

One Door and the Australian Psychosocial Alliance is calling for the federal government to:
🟡 resolve access inequities for psychosocial disability
🟡 develop oversight & capabilities to avoid repeating this in the future
🟡 improve outcomes through a specific psychosocial pathway.

October is Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness, foster connection, and celebrate recovery in all its forms. As part of One Door Mental Health’s campaign blitz for the month, the organisation proudly presented the CREATIVESPACE@PICS JOY Art Exhibition: a vibrant celebration of creativity, healing, and community.

Held from October 24–26 at Harold Park Community Hall, the exhibition marked three years of artistic expression through the Primary Integrated Care Supports (PICS) program. The theme of JOY was brought to life through paintings, linocuts, stencils, and mixed media created by past and present PICS participants, each reflecting their personal journey toward wellness.

Highlights included:

A dynamic collaboration with Canterbury Shopfront Arts Co-op

Final works from a stencil workshop led by artist Marc Dempsey

The JOY Art Exhibition was a powerful showcase of how art can illuminate recovery and bring people together. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Mental Health Month through creativity and connection. Images by

A new report shows the alarming impact of hidden changes at the NDIS, which are creating invisible barriers and growing inequity for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

The Australian Psychosocial Alliance’s Access Denied: Psychosocial Disability and the NDIS report draws on first-hand insights from consumers, participants, carers and others involved in the system, NDIS statistics and organisational data. It offers clear recommendations to ensure people with psychosocial disability have access to the support they need, when they need it.

Wellness Walk Newcastle 2025

On the 19th of October, Newcastle came together for the Wellness Walk. A day to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health challenges.

We began with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Theresa from Spiritual Waterways, followed by a drumming circle led by Earthen Rhythms. They guided us on a short, inclusive walk from Foreshore Park to Queens Wharf Brewery and back. Designed for all abilities, with medical staff on call throughout.

Back at Foreshore Park, the community came together for interactive stalls, a Storytelling Tent where people shared their mental health journeys, live music from the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Folk Club, food trucks (Kumache Kitchen and Coffee Craving), and a healing area offering yoga, mindfulness, and dance therapy. There were also raffles and a jellybean count.

One Door and the Wellness Walk team were proud to be featured on Newcastle News via Nine NBN, which broadcast a segment of the walk to local audiences, helping spread the message even further.

Thank you to everyone who made the day so meaningful.

Better late than never — because mental health deserves the spotlight every day.

As part of One Door’s Mental Health Month Campaign Blitz, Pioneer Clubhouse proudly powered through October with heart, hope, and a whole lot of community spirit.

On Friday, 10 October 2025, our amazing members set up a vibrant stall at the Mental Health Month Expo at The Beaches Farmers Market in North Narrabeen. Alongside other local services, we celebrated wellbeing, raised awareness, and reminded everyone that support is always available.

Our ‘Hope Jar’ was a beautiful highlight — filled with uplifting messages for visitors to take home as a reminder that they matter.

A special shoutout to Sarah for generously sharing her face painting skills and spreading joy throughout the day — your creativity lit up the market.

Huge thanks to Titania, Clinton, Brigid, Wayne, Kunchock, and Sarah for proudly representing Pioneer Clubhouse and embodying the spirit of community care.

And let’s not forget — the Pioneer Clubhouse team also made a special appearance at the Wellness Walk Sydney, stepping out in solidarity to celebrate mental health and wellbeing. Your presence was powerful, joyful, and a true reflection of the Pioneer spirit. Bravo!

Celebrating Mental Health Month with community, connection, and care!

As part of One Door’s Mental Health Month Campaign Blitz, our incredible Carer Advocates from the Hunter New England Family and Carers for Mental Health Program proudly joined the 2025 Mental Health & Wellbeing Expo in the Hunter region — a vibrant, free community event that brought together over 70 local mental health and wellbeing services.

With 500 attendees registered, the HNE FCMHP Greater Newcastle team was on the ground engaging with carers, professionals, and community members — sharing insights, offering support, and raising awareness about the vital role carers play in mental health recovery.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat, connect, and celebrate the power of community care. Together, we’re building a stronger, more compassionate future for mental health in the Hunter region and beyond.

The One Door Story

When one faces the challenges of mental illness, the sky darkens, the weather cools and no shelter can be found. Hope for recovery, for the future, for the community and for each other, can seem to fade. As you traverse the mental health landscape of help, advice, information, services, hospitals and research, it can feel like you are being blown in the wind. This journey can take you down dark alleys and over challenging peaks. What is needed on this journey are signs of hope. Signposts of brightness. Welcoming lights at the end of the road. And what better people to create these signs than those who have gone before you. Those who, for over 30 years, have pioneered paths, supported friends, provided direction and changed the landscape.

Those whose passion belongs in making the world a better place for people who live with a mental illness or care for someone with a mental illness. Those who have planted so many seeds of hope and recovery along the way, they have left a path lit by brightness for those coming after. Those who understand, and are waiting for you to arrive. Standing on the threshold are the people from One Door Mental Health – with information, education, advocacy and most importantly arms open with care and kindness. One Door through which to access a diverse mental health recovery community. A place where those living with mental illness, those caring for someone with a mental illness, and those advocating and supporting people with a mental illness come to share, so that you only have to make one journey. You’ll know where to find the people from One Door because their symbol of hope is the sunflower. For the sunflower turns towards the light; its bright petals unique, and its core bringing them together. When you see the sunflower along your journey, you’ll know that is where you’ll find expert advice and a whole community of people who have walked your path and who are ready to help you walk yours. The sunflower leads to One Door, a place of hope on your mental health journey.

Welcome.
