Over her storied career, speech pathologist Diana Maloney was known by many for her wisdom, kindness and care for colleagues, students and clients, including her pioneering work in private practice and in person-centred care. Diana showed that it’s possible to forge a long, varied, meaningful, and successful career in speech pathology, and to live a life of purpose.
In this context, I was humbled and honoured to receive the 2025 Diana Maloney Award at the University of Sydney on Tuesday, in the presence of Diana’s family members, Phil, Anna, and Tim, as well as the Sydney University Speech Pathology academic team and 2025 graduating class. In particular, I'd like to thank Dr Liz Bourne for her lovely introduction, and to Associate Professors Kimberley Docking and Maree Doble for their long-term support.
I’m so proud of the work we do at Banter Speech & Language for our clients and families, and for speech pathologists and other allied health professionals. I’d like to dedicate the award to our clients and families, and our wonderful team of talented clinicians.
2025 has been an uncertain and, at times, dispiriting year for many clients, and for allied health professionals working in disability, health, and education. This award was wholly unexpected, but perfectly timed to help me keep things in perspective! As we approach the break, I end 2025 highly energised to keep going, and to follow in the footsteps of the many inspirational speech pathologists who have walked before us, including Diana.
