I’m finally sharing my "secret weapon." 🤫 In therapy, we talk a lot about co-regulation, but we don’t always talk about how the practitioner stays grounded. Sometimes meeting a client where they are means matching their high energy—then gently guiding them back to a place of peace.
My favourite tool for that transition? "Breathe" by Stephanie Leavell
It’s a game-changer for my clients (and my own nervous system). 😉

EPISODE 3: THE REWIRED MUSICIAN 🧠🔊

How do you help a brain that’s lost its "internal GPS"? 📍

In the final part of our series, I’m sharing a case study from my practice as a Neurologic Music Therapist (NMT). My client was recovering from brain surgery and dealing with left-side hemiplegia.

Because their proprioception (their sense of where their limb is in space) was damaged, they couldn't find notes on their guitar or gauge how much force they were using to grip the neck.

The Solution: Pattern Sensory Enhancement (PSE).

Unlike a simple metronome, PSE uses the pitch, melody, and dynamics of music to provide a "rhythmic scaffold" for the brain:
⚡️ Force Cues: Using volume to tell the hand exactly how hard to squeeze.
📍 Spatial Cues: Using pitch to guide where the hand needs to reach.

We used music as an external map to bridge the gap where the nerves were failing. After 12 months, they graduated therapy—regaining their proficiency and the confidence to rejoin their music community. 🎹🎸

The brain is capable of incredible detours. Sometimes, it just needs the right rhythm to find its way home.

Here’s your nervous system prep for tomorrow morning.. ✨

I’ll be honest, I haven’t always jumped out of bed feeling ready to go. Lately, I’ve been reaching for this alignment meditation on the days I needed it most—and it’s completely shifted my energy.

It’s become my favorite way to hit the refresh button and start the day feeling lighter. This is a tool that’s definitely helped me find my footing, and I wanted to share it so you can use it tomorrow too. 🤍

Play isn't just a break from therapy—it is the therapy. 🧩✨

Today was an incredibly rewarding day like most of my working days 😊

This client I have been seeing has shown incredible leaps and bounds in their development with their speech and social skills.

Watching a child move from simple imitation to active, auditory processing is a huge win. In music therapy we are using tools like shakers, drums, puppets and rhythmic songs. And it isn't just about having fun; we’re building:

✅ Auditory Processing: Learning to listen to words over visual cues.

✅ Impulse Control: Resisting the "trick" and staying focused.

✅ Social Connection: Bridging the gap from therapist-led play to peer interaction.

The transition to spontaneous peer-to-peer play is one of the most complex leaps a child can make, and music provides the perfect, predictable structure to make it feel safe. 🦁🎶

The Kookaburra is the ultimate healer of the bush. 🌿✨

While the Black Cockatoo grounds us with a deep wail, the Kookaburra uses the medicine of laughter to wake us up. I’ve always felt a special connection to them—they have a bold, cheeky intelligence that feels like they’re in on a joke you haven't heard yet.

Why their frequency heals:

The "Double" Frequency: Kookaburras can actually produce two sounds at once. Their laugh hits a dominant range (around 1.6 kHz) that acts like a mental reset, clearing away stagnant energy and "heavy" thoughts. 🧠

The Sun-Risers: In many First Nations stories, the Kookaburra’s chorus is a signal to wake the sun. They are symbols of hope, loyalty, and the power of family. ☀️

Emotional Release: Their raucous laughter triggers an "infectious" response in us. It’s hard to stay in a state of high stress when the forest is laughing with you.
When I hear them, I feel my energy shift from heavy to light. They are a reminder that even in the middle of the bush, joy is a survival skill.

Do you feel that "lift" when the Kookaburras start their chorus? What have you experienced with kookaburras? 🤔 💬

EPISODE 2: THE REWIRED MUSICIAN 🧠🎹

If I don’t look at my hand, my brain sometimes "forgets" it exists.

Continuing from Episode 1, my nerve graft left me with Level 1 sensation. Which isn't incredibly challenging just a little different.. Parts of my skin are essentially "blind" to light touch, creating a blurred cortical map. This is why I fumble—my brain’s internal GPS is missing data.

The fix? Turning my instruments into medical tools. 🎸

By practicing piano, bass, and guitar without looking, I’m forcing my brain to rely 100% on Proprioception. I’m teaching my nervous system to "see" my hand through the tension of a string or the weight of a key.

But this isn't just about music. Sharpening this sense is what allows me to navigate my daily life:
🔑 Finding keys in a dark bag.
👕 Buttoning a shirt without a mirror.
💻 Typing this caption on autopilot.

Every chord I play "blind" is a new line drawn on my brain's map, making everyday tasks possible.

Next in Episode 3: I’ll show you how I used these exact principles plus Neurologic Music Therapy to help a client regain their confidence and sense of self after brain surgery. 🚑✨

This is Episode 1 of Proprioception. We aren't just fixing a hand; we’re hacking the nervous system.

I’m rolling these golf balls to re-wire my brain. 🧠🧪

Most people take their "sixth sense" for granted.
This is Proprioception: your body’s internal GPS that knows where your limbs are without you looking at them. 🛰️

My GPS has a little dead zone.

Because of a nerve graft I had as a kid, I’m at Level 1 on the Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament Test. (That’s the clinical test where they touch your skin with tiny "hairs.")

The result? I can’t feel the lightest of touch. My skin is silent. In the medical world, this creates a "Blurred Cortical Map." My brain loses track of my hand, causing me to sometimes fumble and drop things. ✋📉

The Science: 🧪
Research in The Journal of Hand Therapy shows that when sensory input is lost, the brain’s "map" of that limb begins to fade. But thanks to Neuroplasticity, we can draw a new one.

By rolling these golf balls without looking (which is a new exercise for me), I’m using Sensory Re-education. I’m forcing my brain to ignore the "blind" skin and instead listen to the deep mechanoreceptors in my muscles and tendons. 🛠️

The Goal:
Playing instruments has been an ongoing thing for me, so by including this new drill plus the complex movements of guitar, bass, and piano, I can continue to bypass the damage and build a high-speed neural detour.

Have you ever heard of proprioception before?

Your body isn't just "tight"—it’s holding a story. 🕊️✨

This 20-minute Deep Tissue Relaxation meditation is designed to go beyond the mind and sink deep into the physical body, specifically targeting the nervous system and the fascia.

🕸️ What is the Fascia?
Think of your fascia as a thin, silver web that wraps around every muscle and organ. When we are stuck in "fight or flight," this web tightens, hardens, and holds onto stress long after the day is over.

📉🧘The Feedback Loop: When your nervous system relaxes, it sends a signal to your muscles that it is safe to let go. This meditation uses progressive relaxation to trigger the Parasympathetic Nervous System (the "Rest and Digest" mode).

💧🧠Fascial Release: Science shows that long, deep relaxation states allow the fascia to shift from a "gel" state (stiff and cold) to a "liquid" state (supple and hydrated). This is where true physical freedom happens.

🛡️❤️ Vagal Tone: By slowing down the breath and focusing on the deep tissues, we stimulate the Vagus Nerve, telling the body: "You are safe. You can soften now."

If you feel like you've been "clenching" your way through life, this 20-minute journey is your permission to melt.

✨ How it feels:
Imagine the tension leaving your jaw, your shoulders dropping away from your ears, and that tightness in your chest finally expanding. 🌬️☁️

Ready for a deep release?

The full 20-minute Deep Tissue Relaxation is available now for $11.11. Download it now and keep it in your playlist forever.

Your body will thank you for this one. 🙏🏻

Today, my sister Natasha would have turned 40. 🕊️

7 years ago, she gave me the "nudge" to go all in on my business. As a Kinesiologist, she was a master at helping people release emotions—she always knew exactly when I needed a good cry to let it all out.

Now, as a Music Therapist, I use that same gift of expression to help my clients.

In my sessions, we use songwriting to:
🎤 Give a voice to needs that are hard to speak.
🔎 Navigate the "messy" parts of life.
🌊 Move with emotions instead of resisting them.

I don’t just teach this—I live it. I’ve recorded my own songs as a lifeline through my own journey. One of those songs is "Feather" (available on Spotify), which I wrote to process the grief of losing Tash two years ago.

Grief has taught me that life is a never-ending journey of navigating feelings. It’s what we do with them that creates beauty.

Happy Birthday, Tash. Thank you sis for the nudge xx ✨

Your nervous system speaks the language of rhythm. 🎧✨

This is a tiny snippet of my 15-minute Sensory Soother track—a tool I designed to help us rhythmically "re-tune" our bodies when life feels like too much. 🌊

Why rhythm? 🥁
When we’re stressed or anxious, our internal rhythms (heart rate and breath) become jagged and erratic. The Sensory Soother uses a steady, intentional beat to help your body find its way back to center. 🧘🫂

The Science of "Entrainment" 🧠🔬
Neuromusicology—the study of how music affects our nervous system—shows that our bodies have a natural tendency to sync up with external rhythms. This is known as Rhythmic Entrainment. 🎶🧬

Predictability = Safety: A consistent beat provides a "predictable" environment for the brain. When your brain knows exactly when the next beat is coming, your "alarm system" (the amygdala) can finally relax. 🛡️💤

Biological Sync: Studies in neuromusicology have shown that a regular, low-frequency beat can actually lower your heart rate and cortisol levels. Your body "clocks in" to the calm tempo. 📉❤️‍🩹

By listening to this track, you are training your nervous system to become familiar with a regulated state. Think of it as a rhythmic anchor for your soul. ⚓✨

✨ Try the snippet:
Press play and listen for 1:11 minutes. Feel the pulse. Notice if your breath/heartbeat starts to naturally slow down to match it. 🌬️☁️ 💓

Ready for the full 15-minute session?
The complete Sensory Soother is ready for you now. Give your nervous system the steady anchor it deserves. 🕊️

The Black Cockatoo is more than a bird; their presence is otherworldly. 🖤

On my bush walks, I’ve felt a deep, soulful intelligence in them—like an internal conversation where we are reading each other's energy.

Why are they so special?

🧠 Genius Minds: They have the intelligence of a 4-year-old human. They are musicians, tool-makers, and problem-solvers.
🎶 The Sound of Safety: Their frequency (2,000–8,000 Hz) is a grounding force. It’s the sound of rain and abundance, signaling our nervous system to stop being on high alert and just breathe.
✨ The Geometry of Sound: Incredible research by the Beeyali Project uses Cymatics to show that their calls create perfect geometric patterns in water and sand. They are singing the forest into balance. 🌿✨

Next time you hear that melancholic wail, stop and listen. Feel their call, what do you notice?
