Not every job needs to be big and complex in order to be important.

This building had a doorway that led into the lift motor plant room. The door was raised above the outside floor level, and required a worker to navigate their way over pipework in order to get to it.

The HSE team designed and installed a simple platform, with some steps, that allowed workers to easily and safely use the doorway to access the lift motor plant room.

The relationship between principal contractors, contractors, sub-contractors, and workers can create complexity in who is responsible for workplace safety.

Would folding working at height into the high-risk work licensing scheme be the answer to reducing the number of fatal falls from height?

It could be, but there are a lot of questions that would need to be answered and challenges to be overcome in order to do that.

We look at the issue on the HSE blog this week: https://heightsafety.net/news/licences-for-high-risk-work-at-heights/

Platforms allow HVAC, and other services to be installed in a way that allows for safe access as well as providing protection and load balancing to the roof itself.

At this under-construction warehouse in Warvervale, in the Central Coast region of New South Wales, the HSE team designed and installed a modular plant platform on the roof.

The platform allowed for radiators, fans and other AC system components to be placed on the roof, with safe access for service technicians.

The slatted screens, installed as part of the platform, obscure the plant and provide a neat and clean look to the building when viewing from outside.

HSE also provided high-grip walkway and edge protection to allow workers to be protected when exiting the building onto the roof area.

Having a culture of safety. What is it? What does it mean?

A lot of the talk when it comes to cultures of safety is around the decisions and actions taken by workers on site.

But a true, meaningful culture of safety involves much more than that.

The team at HSE have dived into cultures of safety. We look at what it takes to truly build one, and the benefits that can come from having one: https://heightsafety.net/news/what-is-a-culture-of-safety/

In order to be safe at work, there are three different types of training that every worker should have completed prior to entering a workplace.

1. General induction, or white card
2. Task-specific training
3. Site-specific training

Only once all three are completed do workers have the necessary layers of knowledge in place to protect themselves against the risks that come with doing the work and the environment in which the work will be done.

Just about every worker will, at some point, find themselves in a situation where they are working at height.

This holds especially true for those in the building, construction and general trades sectors.

With tens of thousands of new workers entering workplaces where the risks of a fall are very real, why are so few workers completing even basic height safety training?

On the HSE blog this week, look at how employers can go about improving the level of height safety knowledge of their teams: https://heightsafety.net/news/how-to-improve-height-safety-knowledge/

They said lowest prices were just the beginning, but few predicted that lower risk tolerance was also on the to do list at Bunnings.

Our team installed protective mesh screens over the skylight sheeting at this Bunnings Warehouse in south-west Sydney.

Mesh screens like these go a long way to protecting people accessing warehouse roofs like this, as the skylight panels that are commonly installed are not designed to be walked on. A significant number of falls form height in warehouses come from workers standing on skylight panels that cannot support their weight.

You can find out more about skylight panels and falls from height on our website: https://heightsafety.net/news/skylight-panels-the-often-forgotten-fall-risk/

Decisions are never made in a vacuum.

Although it can relatively straight forward tell workers to just "do the right thing", that only works if they are given the support and resources to do so.

On the HSE blog, our team looks at the structures of our workplaces operate, and the part they can play in better protecting people.

Safe Work Australia recently published their Key Work Health and Safety Statistics 2025.

Unfortunately, the data shows that falls from height is still the second-biggest cause of workplace deaths in Australia, behind motor vehicle incidents.

Over recent years, the trend line has been heading in the wrong direction.

What can we do about it? The HSE team have some ideas.

You can find out in our latest blog post: https://heightsafety.net/news/work-safety-data-and-falls-from-height/

Not every fall risk is on a roof.

This recent project saw the HSE team design and install custom fixed ladder and walkway platforms for access to this mechanical plant.

Maintenance technicians would need to safely access the top of the plant to be able to properly maintain the building's heating and ventilation access - an important task that assists in avoiding potentially fatal legionnaire's disease outbreaks.

The access system needed to allow workers safe access to all the maintenance areas they needed without compromising the performance of the plant.
