Poetry isn’t just about words—it’s a powerful creative process that can support emotional wellbeing and mental health. Through rhythm, imagery and metaphor, poetry gives shape to experiences that are often hard to express in everyday language.

Sand tray (or sandplay) therapy offers a gentle, non-verbal way to explore emotions, beliefs and stories held in the unconscious. By creating scenes with symbols and miniatures, clients often discover clarity, healing and insight without needing to find the “right” words.

Symbolic Insights From a Scene

✨A pterodactyl on a bridge, a lion, and a treasure box… what might they reveal?
Every symbol is personal, but these are common themes:

✨Pterodactyl on a Bridge
Bridges symbolise transitions or moving from one stage of life to another.
A pterodactyl may suggest:
• Seeing life from a higher perspective
• Holding ancient or intuitive wisdom
• Being “between worlds,” preparing for change
• Observing before stepping forward

✨The Lion
Often represents:
• Courage and inner strength
• Protection
• Personal power and boundaries
• A desire to stand confidently in one’s truth

✨The Treasure Box
A closed box may reflect hidden potential, guarded emotions, or inner gifts not yet explored.
An open box can symbolise discovery, readiness, abundance or self-worth.

✨Together, these symbols may express a journey of stepping into personal power, standing at a threshold, and uncovering inner treasures.
Sand tray therapy allows these messages to emerge naturally and safely.

✨ Why Can Happiness Feel So Hard to Reach?
So many people chase happiness believing they must achieve, become, or have something before they can finally feel it. But happiness isn’t a destination—it’s a practice.
Psychologist Abraham Maslow taught us about the Hierarchy of Needs: a journey from safety and belonging all the way to self-actualisation—the place where our highest potential is fulfilled. But if that level feels out of reach, does happiness become unreachable too?
💛 Freud believed happiness comes from the absence of pain and the presence of meaningful pleasure.
💛 Positive psychology reminds us that with intention and awareness, happiness can be cultivated, one choice at a time.
As a holistic therapist, here are some key principles that genuinely support emotional wellbeing:
✨ Gratitude & Appreciation
A few minutes each day can change everything. Notice what you’re grateful for, write it down, or express it to someone. Gratitude strengthens our connection to ourselves and others.

When we step into nature, something remarkable happens—our whole system begins to recalibrate.

Research shows that spending time outdoors lowers cortisol levels, reduces blood pressure, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s natural “rest and restore” mode.

Nature doesn’t just soothe the mind; it supports emotional regulation, creativity, and overall wellbeing. The colours, sounds, textures, and rhythms of the natural world gently guide us back into balance.

✨Symbols and archetypes speak a language deeper than words—they connect directly to the unconscious mind, where our hidden stories, fears, strengths, and longings live.

✨When we work with imagery in art therapy or sand tray, something powerful happens:

🪽Symbols bypass the thinking mind
They slip past logic and tap into emotion, intuition, and memory—allowing us to explore parts of ourselves we don’t always have language for.

🪽Archetypes mirror universal human experiences
Figures like “the Inner Child,” “the Wise Woman,” or “the Warrior” help us understand our own patterns and strengths through shared, timeless stories.

✨Our thoughts filter how we see the world.
When we dwell in negativity, the mind begins to look for proof of what it believes — colouring reality through a lens of fear, doubt, or limitation.

This doesn’t mean our experiences aren’t real — only that our focus shapes what we notice most.

✨By bringing awareness to these patterns and gently shifting them, we open space for new perspectives, balance, and emotional healing.

✨Mindfulness, creative expression, and self-compassion can help reframe how we see — and how we feel.
