Plumtree Children's Services

Plumtree Children's Services Plumtree is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that helps families thrive. We see families in the Inner West and South East areas of Sydney.

Trusted for over 30 years, we provide therapies and support for children aged birth to 8 years with a disability or developmental delay and their families. Plumtree is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support for young children ages birth to 8 years old with a developmental delay or disability and their families. We help children to grow and develop, reach their potential and participate in the community. Drawing on our years of experience and broad expertise, we provide education, therapy, information and training in a variety of settings—mostly in the home, and also at the child’s preschool, child care centre or school, and our Marrickville centre. We provide practical services and support to children and their families, helping them to enjoy the time they spend together and to discover everyday learning opportunities. Plumtree operates on Eora Nation. We acknowledge the Gadigal-Wangal people as the traditional custodians of this Land. We pay our respect to the Elders past, present and emerging for they hold the memories, the culture and hopes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the nation.

A special moment for Plumtree this week.

For more than ten years, families have co-designed and shaped this work with us. This week, that long-term partnership has been recognised in the new edition of the Oxford Handbook of Positive Psychology and Disability, where a chapter based on Sylvana's PhD research tells the story of how parent peer workers can create real, lasting change in early childhood intervention.

The research highlights something families have shown us again and again: support is strongest when professional expertise sits alongside the lived experience of parents. When both are valued, the whole system becomes more welcoming, more effective and more sustainable.

This work has only been possible because so many parents shared their ideas, tested new approaches and led the way with courage and generosity.

We also thank the professionals who worked in genuine partnership to make this model thrive.

Our hope is that this research helps parent peer work become a recognised and supported part of early childhood intervention across Australia and beyond.

Thank you to the many families who have been part of our journey to grow a strong parent peer workforce at Plumtree.

Have you visited a library with your child lately? We’d love to hear about your experience.

Libraries should be welcoming and enjoyable places for all families. Have you noticed positive changes at your local library? While inclusion is improving, some barriers can still make outings challenging for children with disabilities or developmental delays.

Plumtree has created a free online training program to support library staff in making their spaces and programs more inclusive. Now we want to know if it has made a difference for your family.

Your feedback matters. Governments and organisations want to understand what’s working well and what still needs to change. By taking this short survey, you will help shape a more inclusive future for all families.

As a thank you, you’ll also go into the draw to win a $50 book voucher.

If your child is unwell, please let your keyworker or therapist know.
It is our policy that sessions do not go ahead when a child is sick. If a member of our staff catches an illness, she could be off work and miss many sessions. Worse still, she could spread the illness to other children.

Some signs your child might display if they're sick:
- They are not eating or playing as usual.
- They have lost their appetite
- They cry abnormally
- They need Panadol

If you cancel your session, your keyworker or therapist can often spend the time making resources for your child, finding information for you or helping in many other ways.

Thank you for your understanding.

Wondering what your child’s behaviour is telling you?

At Plumtree, we understand that everything children do is a type of behaviour—whether they are running, eating, playing or talking. When we talk about behaviour support, we mean offering help with behaviours that can make learning, playing or socialising a little harder for children.

Our behaviour specialists work with you to understand your child’s needs and find simple, practical strategies that make daily life easier.
