Syphilis notifications continue to rise across Australia, affecting people across all communities. Many cases present without symptoms, making routine testing a crucial part of providing comprehensive sexual health care.

As clinicians, you play a central role in early detection and prevention. Incorporating regular syphilis testing into care for sexually active patients can help reduce missed diagnoses and support better health outcomes.

Putting syphilis on the radar starts with all of us.

Thank you to everyone who joined us today on Gadigal Land (Sydney) for the Second National Congenital Syphilis Roundtable, convened by NACCHO Aboriginal Health Australia and ASHM.

The roundtable brought together leaders from across health, community, and policy sectors for a day of cross-sector collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Together, we developed tangible, achievable actions to strengthen the national response and accelerate progress towards eliminating congenital syphilis in Australia.

We look forward to continuing this critically important work and progressing the priority actions identified through the roundtable in the coming months.

Introducing Michelle, the powerhouse behind ASHM’s Global Programs!🌏🌟

For nearly 12 years, Michelle has led as Director of ASHM’s Global Division with endless passion, curiosity, and a dedication to working with and learning from people across different backgrounds and contexts.

When she’s not at work, you’ll find Michelle spending time with her family and friends, going to the beach, stand-up paddleboarding, doing yoga, or binge watching some reality TV!

If Michelle could only eat one cuisine forever, she’s choosing Thai — no hesitation!🍜

And if she could travel anywhere in the world, she would want to go trekking straight into the heart of the Amazon rainforest🌴

From global programs to daydreaming about adventuring in the Amazon, we love the spark Michelle brings to ASHM!✨

Women experiencing intimate partner violence are at greater risk of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and often face additional barriers to care.

With syphilis recently declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance in Australia, there is a growing need for greater awareness, screening, and early intervention across the women’s health and family violence workforce.

Join ASHM for this free ‘Learn at Lunch’ webinar with Women's Health NSW, hosted by Dr Eleanor ‘Ellie’ Freedman, the NSW medical workforce advisor in Sexual Violence, and a sexual health physician with over 20 years' experience.

This session is designed to equip women’s health and domestic, family and sexual violence services workers with practical strategies to recognise risk, support screening and timely access to care, and strengthen their service’s response to syphilis.

What do women living with HIV want clinicians to know?

From navigating stigma to accessing the right information and support, their voices are essential to improving HIV care.

This National Day of Women Living with HIV we sat down with two women living with HIV to hear their insights on how clinicians can provide more informed, compassionate and person-centred care.

Around 85% of people who have ever been sexually active will get HPV at some stage in their life.
Clinical awareness and screening are essential to the early detection of HPV-related cancers.
For healthcare providers, staying informed and up to date with current clinical guidance is essential to delivering evidence-based care and improving patient outcomes.

SAVE THE DATE: 2026 Pacific HIV Symposium! 📅

HIV is rising across the Pacific, with national outbreaks declared in Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The 2026 Pacific HIV Symposium will convene regional health leaders, clinicians, policymakers and community organisations from across the Pacific, Australia and New Zealand to strengthen prevention, treatment, and care and build a coordinated response to the growing HIV epidemic.

Without decisive regional action, the Pacific risks reversing decades of progress toward eliminating HIV as a public health threat. The 2026 is an essential opportunity to connect, learn, and contribute to a coordinated regional response.

Stay tuned for registration information.
