Staff, patients, community members and veterans gathered at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital (HKH) to commemorate ANZAC Day in a moving service of remembrance.

The service was attended by Hornsby RSL Sub-Branch member Phill White, NSLHD Executive Director of Operations Lee Gregory, patients who participated as ex-veterans, and hospital staff, including current and former veterans.

HKH General Manager Amanda Green thanked everyone involved for their participation and contribution to the service.

The commemoration included a commemorative address, poem reading, wreath laying and the Ode of Remembrance.

The Last Post and minute’s silence created a moment of collective stillness and respect, as attendees paused to honour the service and sacrifice of veterans.

The service concluded with The Rouse, the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems, and the planting of two rosemary bushes, providing a lasting symbol of remembrance at the hospital.

🤝 PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION AT HORNSBY HOSPITAL 🤝

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital recently hosted a Philanthropy Partners Program training session in collaboration with the NORTH Foundation, bringing staff together to strengthen understanding of the role philanthropy plays in healthcare.

The session sparked valuable conversations about how philanthropic support can enhance patient care and drive meaningful improvements across the hospital.

In December 2025, the hospital’s philanthropic partnership was recognised when it received the inaugural NSLHD Facility of the Year Award at the NORTH Foundation’s end-of-year awards, reflecting the strong connection between the hospital and the foundation.

Staff enjoyed a special treat during the recent Easter celebrations thanks to the generous support of St Marlos Bakery, one of our valued local bakeries. As our primary sponsor, St Marlos Bakery kindly provided 450 hot cross buns, which were distributed to staff across the hospital.

The gesture was warmly received and helped spread a sense of celebration and appreciation among staff during the Easter period. We sincerely thank St Marlos Bakery for their generosity and ongoing support of our HKH community.

SPOTLIGHT ON PUBLIC HEALTH DENTISTRY 🦷

For more than 15 years, Dr Terry Ng has been making a difference across Northern Sydney Local Health District, providing vital dental care to those who need it most.

From Northern Beaches to Ryde, Royal North Shore and now Hornsby, his work highlights the critical role public dentistry plays in supporting vulnerable communities — including pensioners, refugees and people on low incomes.

“Public dentistry provides a safety net,” Dr Ng says. “You know you’re helping people who really need it.”

Beyond routine care, the work can be complex and deeply rewarding, supporting patients with significant needs and improving quality of life.

Public oral health services also provide free care for eligible children under 18 — something many families may not realise.

It’s meaningful work that goes far beyond the chair, helping people stay healthy, confident and connected.

Two Hornsby Hospital nurses, Clinical Nurse Consultant Vivian Nguyen and Nurse Unit Manager Thomas Fitzsimmons, are among 16 staff members celebrating their graduation from the Applied Safety and Quality Program.

The year‑long program equips NSW Health staff with the skills they need to lead safety and quality improvements in their clinical services and is delivered in partnership with the Clinical Excellence Commission.

Graduates recently showcased their innovations through talks and a poster display at the half‑day event held at the Northern Sydney Education Centre on the grounds of Macquarie Hospital.

Vivian discussed innovations in preparing the hospital to implement "Sip Til Send", a new protocol where adult patients are allowed to sip fluids before surgery. Thomas presented on fall prevention strategies in the Hornsby hospital’s dementia and delirium unit.

Executive Director Clinical Governance and Patient Experience Mark Zacka said the group represented a diverse group of individuals who were all doing incredible work with their teams to improve the care we deliver and the experiences of our patients, consumers, families, and carers.

He described the skills gained through the program as “broad and powerful.”

🏥🔬HORNSBY HOSPITAL OPENS NEW HYBRID OPERATING THEATRE

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital has opened a newly upgraded state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre to support the delivery of safe, high quality surgical care for the community.

One of the first patients to benefit from the new theatre was Cathrine, who underwent a complex procedure using the new imaging technology in the theatre. Cathrine said the upgraded theatre technology helped improve her recovery by keeping the surgery minimally invasive.

“After a previous surgery I spent far more time in recovery than I have had to with this surgery being minimally invasive due to the upgraded technology,” she said. “The staff and the care they provided was fantastic from start to finish.”

The theatre has been designed to support modern models of care, with improved workflow, better integrated systems and advanced hybrid imaging technology enabling greater precision and efficiency for clinical teams.

The redeveloped theatre responds to increasing clinical complexity and supports advances in endovascular surgery and allows for future opportunities with interventional radiology. The upgrade also ensures that the hospital is well equipped to meet current and future demand.

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital General Manager Amanda Green said the refurbished theatre will support better outcomes for patients by enabling more precise and less invasive procedures.

“Designed with both patients and staff in mind, the hybrid theatre brings together advanced imaging technology, improved workflow and better integrated systems,” she said.

“These enhancements support our clinical teams to deliver care with greater confidence, precision and efficiency, ultimately improving the experience and outcomes for our patients.”
