Modern Pilates Modern Pilates specializes in Therapeutic Pilates, tailored programs & Physiotherapy




Pilates is a system of mental and physical conditioning that connects and uses the whole body with the aim of improving fitness and sustaining well-being. The Pilates Method encourages a balance of muscle strength and flexibility with minimal stress. At the Modern Pilates Studio in St Leonards, on Sydney’s North Shore, we provide a modified version of the traditional Pilates Method. Our approach w
as developed by our Director, Penny Latey, and is based on a thorough understanding of exercise science and current research into movement ability and injury. Anyone of any level of experience can benefit from this approach – from the average person seeking to improve their strength and fitness, to someone recovering from a severe injury. We specialise in therapeutic Pilates, and are extremely experienced in providing individually designed programmes for students who suffer from serious muskuloskeletal problems, chronic pain, problems with posture and dysfunctional feet. This includes anyone from the elite athlete or dancer to the older client with bunions, from ages 10 to 90. As well as specialist help for specific problems we also run regular mat classes for those without injuries. Mat classes are suitable whether you’re just starting out with Pilates or are already an experienced student looking for a new studio. All our instructors here at Modern Pilates are trained and supervised by Penny Latey, an additional drawcard for experienced students. If you are interested in learning more about Penny Latey’s Modern Pilates but cannot attend the studio in person, Allen & Unwin have published her step-by-step book which can be easily ordered online.

THE MERMAID PROGRESSION

Part 2- The second variation of seated side bend in the Mermaid position, sit with both knees on one side, but this position may not be comfortable for those with tight hips. You can modify the seated position by putting one leg on the ground. We are going to side bend away from your leg’s breathing out and return to upright, keeping your sitting bones in the bed, but if you have hip or knee problems this position may not be appropriate for you. PART-1:The traditional seated 4th position is a difficult position for those with tight hip muscles particularly abductors and hip external rotator or lower back or pelvic pain
Mermaid involves a controlled side bend and lateral torso stretch
If your hips are tight, we can start seated on the Cadillac using the push through bar. Start seated with the feet hip width apart aligned on the floor. Holding the bar palm down and keeping the hips stable inhale and push the bar down and away as you exhale and return to the start position inhaling.
Watch points- don’t load the bar too much, it is for support and sensory feedback, prop the clients’ feet on a small stool to help keep the connection from feet to pelvis.
