Burnout vs Stress — What’s the Difference?
In clinical practice, this is one of the most common areas of confusion I see among clients navigating workplace challenges.
Stress is typically short-term.
It presents as pressure, urgency, and heightened emotional or physical tension — but often resolves once the situation changes.
Burnout, however, is different.
It develops over time and is characterised by:
• Emotional exhaustion
• Reduced motivation and performance
• Detachment or feeling “shut down”
• Ongoing fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
For individuals recovering from workplace psychological injury, recognising this difference is critical.
At Green Valley Psychotherapy Practice, we support individuals experiencing workplace stress, burnout, and trauma through evidence-based, trauma-informed care.
