What does sugar have to do with family history?
Far more than you might think.

Join us today at 2.00pm AEDT for a fascinating webinar with Patrice Connelly, who will take us on a journey through the global sugar trade — a story that threads through slavery, migration, shipping, industry, engineering, tool-making, and even the British Museum’s early specimen collections.

You’ll learn about:
🌱 How sugar was made and refined
🍬 The art of sculpting sugar
âš“ The populations and industries shaped by the trade
🏺 Resources to help you trace ancestors connected to sugar — from shipowners and enslavers to confectioners, tool-makers, dentists and more
🇬🇧 A strong focus on the UK, with insights into North Queensland’s sugar farms

Were your ancestors involved in the sugar world — in ways sweet or sour?
Don’t miss this rich exploration of a story that may be closer to your family tree than you realise.

Who’s ready for a knowledge-packed weekend? www.sag.org.au/events

Tomorrow (Sat 15 Nov) SAG has three online special interest group meetings lined up! In the morning, our Legacy Software Users Group goes online at 10.00am AEDT to discuss how to incorporate DNA matches and information into your family tree software.

At the same time, our Aotearoa New Zealand Research Group will be delving into World War II research, commemorating the stories of New Zealanders who served (including those in Australian forces) and how to find their service records.

Then in the afternoon, the Colonial Australia Research Group meets at 3:00 om AEDT via Zoom looking at family members from the entertainment sector! This is a collaborative session where we all share tips and suggestions, the essence of what SAG groups are about.

We hope to see you there!

🌺 Continuing Remembrance: Discovering War Service Through the Archives

Following Remembrance Day this week, and our One Place Focus Group last night, we are reminded of the incredible value of the National Archives of Australia (NAA) in preserving our collective wartime history: https://www.naa.gov.au

If you have ancestors who served in WWI, WWII, or later conflicts, the NAA is an essential resource. You can access digitised service records, many of which include enlistment papers, photographs, medical details, and correspondence, all available for free through the RecordSearch portal.

These records help bring names on memorials to life, revealing the real people behind the service numbers. It’s an incredibly moving and rewarding part of any family history journey.

đź’ˇ Tip: Try searching by full name and service number (if known) and use variations for common surnames. Even non-combatant roles and home-front contributions are often well documented.

Let’s keep their stories alive, not just this week, but every day.

On this Remembrance Day, we invite you to join our One Place Focus Group meeting at 7:30 PM AEDT via Zoom: https://www.sag.org.au/event-6328229

As tonight’s session falls on Remembrance Day, we’ll be exploring how the history of a single place can help us honor and remember those who came before us.

Whether you already have a one-place study or are just curious, you’ll find a friendly, collaborative atmosphere for sharing stories and tips. Come along and discover how focusing on a town, village, or even a ship can add rich context to your family history research. Let’s learn and remember together.

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause to remember all who have served, fought, and fallen in times of war and conflict.

As family historians, we carry forward the legacy of those whose stories are woven through history. Today, and every day, we honour the names, faces, and families behind the records — the sons, daughters, siblings, and friends who gave so much.

May we continue to seek, preserve, and share their stories so that they are never forgotten.

🌺 Lest We Forget

10/11/2025

At 11 am today, we pause together.

Wherever you are, join us in observing one minute’s silence, in memory of those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Lest we forget.
