Chronic coughing can be a symptom of long-term stress. Such coughs are often dry and persistent, unlike the phlegmy coughs associated with illness.
Stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, released during stress can affect the respiratory system, leading to coughing as a protective mechanism.
Stress also affects the vagus nerve. This causes amongst other things, acid reflux which can also cause persistent coughing.
Using a combination of manual therapy, diaphragmatic breathing and psychological treatments are useful in reducing the intensity, duration and frequency of these coughing episodes.
