Pelvic pain is one of the most common condtions treated by our women's, men's and pelvic health team.

Not surprsing as it affects up to 1 in 5 women and 1 in 12 men.
So what is pelvic pain?

Pelvic pain is not a disease or condition on its own but really an umbrella term to describe pain anywhere between the belly button and the upper thighs both on the surface and the “inside” (bladder, uterus, ovaries, re**um, ge****ls). The pain might be part of a diagnosed condition such as endometriosis, bladder pain syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome. It could be following an injury – such as a bruised or broken coccyx or a childbirth related tear. Or it may have begun with an infection such as thrush or a urinary tract infection.

To learn more about pelvic pain, and more importantly learn about how to get help, read our blog here https://www.totalphysiomv.com/do-you-have-persistent-or-chronic-pelvic-pain/

STOP Letting back pain cut your surf sessions short 🏄‍♂️

Did you know… Low back pain is one of the most common complaints in surfers. Research suggests 30–50% of surfers experience back pain annually.
You spend less than 10% of a surf session actually riding waves but up to 50% paddling in spinal extension?
It’s not the pop-up. It’s not the turn. It’s the time spent arching your lower back.

Here are 5 physiotherapy-led strategies to reduce back pain risk:

1️⃣ Prioritise Thoracic Mobility Limited mid-back extension increases load on the lumbar spine during paddling.

2️⃣ Build Trunk & Glute Strength Target deep core stabilisers and posterior chain endurance to improve spinal control under load.

3️⃣ Optimise Paddling Mechanics Avoid excessive lumbar hinging. Aim for extension distributed through the thoracic spine with light abdominal engagement.

4️⃣ Sit, Don’t Lie Between Sets When resting, sit astride your board rather than remaining prone. This reduces cumulative lumbar extension time.

5️⃣ Post-Surf Recovery Matters Address hip flexor, anterior chain and lat tightness to minimise prolonged extension stress.

🏄‍♂️ The key takeaway: it’s not just the wave riding, it’s the cumulative spinal position over the entire session that matters.

If back pain is limiting your time in the water, targeted physiotherapy can help keep you surfing longer and stronger. Call (02) 9907 0321 to get assessed today if you need further support and individualised advice.

As March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, we’d like to share some information.

What is endometriosis?

The endometrium is the lining of the uterus which grows increases during the menstrual cycle and then bleeds away each month with the period. Endometriosis is when this lining is found outside of the uterus eg. around the ovaries, bowel etc.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
• Pain in the pelvis, tailbone (coccyx), bottom, p***c area, re**um or lower back either during or outside the time of the period. Pain can be present with s*x.
• Bowel symptoms: a sense of incomplete emptying, pain when opening bowels or passing wind, food intolerances, bloating, diarrhoea, or constipation
• Bladder symptoms: needing to go to the toilet frequently, urgency, slow passage of urine, or bladder pain
• Hip, groin or abdominal pain
• Low energy, behavioural or emotional changes, anxiety or depression
• Tiredness at the time of the period

Seeking help for suspected endometriosis:
• See your GP who will assess if your symptoms may be due to endometriosis; suggest appropriate pain medications or hormonal treatment and organise referral to a specialist or for investigations that may be needed
• Learn about endometriosis from reputable sources such as Endometriosis Australia, Pelvic Pain Foundation Australia or Jean Hailes Women’s Health
• Physiotherapy – whether the symptoms are related to endometriosis or not, a women’s health physio can help with all of the above symptoms

We’re aiming to raise $500 to support Head Above Water in delivering mental fitness programs and helping to reduce su***de across Australia.

Some of our team and their families will be swimming across the 24 hours to help shine a light on this important community cause.

Neck pain… or is it actually your shoulder? 🤔

Not all shoulder pain starts in the shoulder.
Stiffness, overload or irritation in the neck can often refer pain into the shoulder, upper back, arm - even cause headaches or tingling.

Common signs it might be neck-related:
▫ Pain that moves or changes location
▫ Shoulder scans that “look fine”
▫ Symptoms worse with desk work or sleep
▫ Relief when your neck is treated, not the shoulder

This is where a musculoskeletal assessment matters.
We look at how your neck, shoulder, posture, strength and nervous system are all working together - not just where it hurts.

Early assessment = clearer diagnosis, faster recovery, fewer flare-ups.

📍 If your shoulder pain hasn’t quite made sense… your neck might be the missing piece.

Book in for an assessment by calling (02) 9907 0321 and get answers.

Tips for managing household tasks with a sore wrist or thumb 🤍

If everyday jobs are flaring up your wrist or thumb pain, a few small changes can make a big difference 👇

🍳 In the kitchen
• Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need so it’s lighter to pour
• Place a colander in the sink when draining rice or pasta so you can use both hands on the pan
• Wear oven gloves when holding pans or the kettle to spread the load across both hands
• Tap the side of a new jar lid on a firm surface (bench top or chopping board) to release the seal
• Use grippy mat pieces to hold both the jar and lid — great for bottles too
• Consider a jar-opening aid if grip strength is an issue

💻 At the computer
• Use a rolled towel or forearm support to keep wrists in a more neutral position
• Try an ergonomic mouse to reduce wrist strain
• Take regular breaks from desk work
• Roll your shoulders and stretch your arms to support posture
• Use a foam roller to ease tight upper-back muscles

Did you know physiotherapy can play an important role in supporting autistic children?

For many kids, challenges with coordination, balance, posture, strength or motor planning can impact confidence at school, sport and play.

Our paediatric physiotherapy team at Total Physiotherapy Manly Vale works with children and families to:

✔ Improve gross motor skills
✔ Build strength and coordination
✔ Support posture and body awareness
✔ Increase confidence in movement
✔ Create personalised programs in a calm, supportive environment

Every child is different — and therapy should be too.

If you'd like to learn how physiotherapy may support your child, read our latest blog or book a paediatric assessment.
