A SOUND LIFE Helping people in need build the resilience to cope with adversity through music, yoga and meditation

A Sound Life helps people in need build the resilience required to cope with adversity and stress. We do this by using music, yoga and meditation to reinstate harmony between their hearts and minds. The most vulnerable people in our communities often have the least access to the tools for transformation, resilience, connection and empowerment. We are committed to changing that and to helping them confidently surf the waves of life and realise they can experience complete joy within their lives. Since 2014, we’ve serviced over 50 facilities, positively impacting over 30,000 people in our community who need it the most. We have over 350 committed ASL volunteers who have delivered over 2,500 free music, yoga and meditation sessions to date. These numbers are a testament to who we are as an organisation, the culture we have created, our ambition and dedication, what we’ve achieved and the way we serve. Our compassionate and committed team of skilled volunteers include musicians, yoga and meditation teachers. These volunteers deliver regular programs to people in health care facilities such as hospitals and disability centres, while also delivering programs to underserved communities such as youth at risk and women's shelters. We’ve witnessed the joy and resilience our tools can deliver time and time again, which is why we are so sure they can make a difference to all lives and why we're energised to do just that.

Today we’re sharing a really special moment - Alice, our Yoga Program Manager, teaching one of her first sessions with our beautiful community at Miroma.❤️

Miroma has been with A Sound Life from the very beginning. Year after year, they’ve welcomed our volunteers with such care, and they’ve shown what wellbeing can look like when it’s consistent, relational, and built on trust.

Alice, thank you for bringing your steadiness and heart into the room.
Miroma, thank you for walking alongside us for so long. We are genuinely grateful.

⭐️ Here’s to the next chapter, one gentle session at a time.

Intergenerational trauma does not disappear on its own.
But it can be understood.
And once understood, it can begin to shift.

This blog draws from the Trauma Research Foundation exploring how inherited patterns can shape the way we relate, cope, and feel safe in the world.

When we bring awareness, empathy and presence to inherited patterns, we create space for something new.

Healing often begins with one person choosing to respond differently.

It’s words like this that remind us why we do what we do. ❤️

Andrew Dunn recently spent time in hospital after a stroke. During his stay, our volunteer musicians visited regularly, bringing live music into the ward and a moment of comfort in the middle of recovery.

“The bright spot of my hospital stay has been the regular musical visits, which have lifted my heart and soul.”
We are so grateful to Andrew for sharing this, and to every volunteer who shows up with care and presence to make moments like this possible.

This is the heart of A Sound Life. Small acts of wellbeing, shared with love, reaching the people who need it most.

Happy International Women’s Day ❤️

Today, our A Sound Life team and our friends at .disabilityservices are reflecting on what this day means to them.

We are celebrating women’s strength, leadership, creativity and care. We are also holding space for what so many women carry, often quietly. The mental load. Caring responsibilities. Health changes. Grief. Trauma. The pressure to keep going.
In our work across Sydney and Australia, we meet women in hospitals, aged care, disability and mental health settings. We see how powerful it is when a woman gets a moment to breathe, soften her shoulders, and feel like herself again. Sometimes it’s one song. Sometimes it’s gentle movement. Sometimes it’s simply being seen.

This reel shares our reflections, and our gratitude for the women we serve, the women who volunteer, and the women who keep showing up for others.

If you can, check in on a woman in your world today. Make it real. Make it kind. ⭐️

Trauma aware yoga is not about advanced poses or pushing through.

It’s about meeting the student where they’re at.

Many people we support are navigating illness, disability, anxiety, grief, trauma, or major life transitions. In those moments, the nervous system does not need pressure. It needs steadiness. It needs choice. It needs a space where people can breathe without feeling watched or judged.

That is why trauma aware yoga matters.

At A Sound Life our yoga sessions are gentle, adaptable and led with care in hospitals, aged care, disability and mental health settings across Australia. The goal is simple. Help people feel a little safer in their body, and a little less alone.

If you are a yoga teacher, carer, health worker, or someone curious about what trauma aware yoga actually means, save this post and share it with someone who needs it.

International Women’s Day is this month, and it’s a moment to celebrate women. It’s also a moment to be honest about what many women are carrying.

So many women are holding a lot. Caring for others. Keeping everything moving. Working. Parenting. Managing health changes. Supporting families. Sometimes doing all of that while quietly navigating anxiety, grief, trauma, or burnout.

At A Sound Life we support women every week through free music, yoga and meditation in hospitals, aged care, disability and mental health settings. We see how much a small moment of calm can matter.

A breath that settles the body.
A song that softens the heart.
A gentle stretch that helps someone feel like themselves again.

This month, we honour women’s strength, and we also honour women’s need for rest, support, and real care.

If you are reading this, take it as your reminder to check in with yourself, and to check in with another woman in your world. ⭐️

When life feels like too much, it makes sense if your body feels it first. Tight chest. shallow breath. restless energy. fatigue.

A gentle place to start is not with big answers, but with small signals of safety.
Feet on the floor. a longer exhale. a hand on your heart. a moment of music, movement, or stillness.

You are allowed to go slowly. ❤️

❤️ MEET ALICE ❤️

Alice (pronounced Al-ee-chay) is a yoga teacher, Bhakti practitioner and doula devoted to supporting people through life’s most tender and transformative moments. ✨

Her journey into yoga began as a path of healing, and over the past 8+ years the practice has become her anchor, her devotion, and her way of serving community.

Deeply inspired by Bhakti yoga, Alice believes movement is more than exercise, it is prayer in motion. Through breath, mantra and mindful movement, she gently guides people back to connection: to their bodies, their hearts, and something greater than themselves.

With a special focus on emotional wellbeing and women’s health, her teaching is grounded, inclusive and heart-led.

Alice says, “Yoga isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering you were always enough 💛.

Our Story

We're facing a global health and well-being crisis around the world. - 3,000 Australian's died in 2017 due to su***de - 300 Million people globally live with a mental illness. In Australia, it's 1 in 5 people - 1 Billion people globally live with a disability - $20B spent in corporate absenteeism in Australia each year due to mental health concerns The state of our planet is growing ever-more precarious. We’re on a mission to change that.

A Sound Life is Australia's first well-being charity inspiring people in need to improve their health and well-being with free yoga, music and mediation programs. We service health care facilities (hospitals, aged care, disabilities, mental health) and underserved communities including youth at risk, women's shelters and refugees. Through community and corporate support, more than 200 volunteers have delivered 1,500 programs across 40 facilities serving 22,500 people since 2015. But there's still many more people to serve. Our goal is to inspire the lives of 50,000 through yoga, music and meditation programs by 2020 and we need your help.

In February 2019 we’ll be launching The Sound Life Dome, Sydney’s first for-purpose venue consciously offering an event space for making a difference. A place which makes you feel fiercely creative and wholesome, just by nature of its sacred geometry and thoughtful design.

The dome is a multi-function venue to be utilised by A Sound Life, other charities, community groups, educational institutions and the corporate sector. A venue to host events, conferences, concerts, workshops, private functions, exhibitions, screenings and more. Every event held in the dome will help us deliver more free music, yoga and meditation programs to people in need.
