Cost of Diabetes
We know that chronic disease is a huge health issue world wide. We are living longer, we are fatter than we’ve ever been, and lifestyle diseases like diabetes are on the rise everywhere. Chronic diseases by the nature are not curable, instead for those people who suffer from them it’s a case on ongoing management, for the rest of their lives. Diabetes has been described as the biggest epidemic of the 21st century, there are now more over weight and obese in the world than hungry.

Our first investigations are just getting a handle on the scale of the problem, a diabetic patient costs three time at $2611 to the MBS and PBS every year, a patient without the disease only $875. The amount of time spent in hospital is similar, with diabetes patients spending 3 times longer in hospital each year. In all States the numbers of men suffering from the disease is slightly higher, and as men in general are less likely to make use of the medical system, that difference is significant. In general men leave the problem longer, cost more and have poorer outcomes. Our first learning is targeting men with diabetes could give more benefit than campaigns that don’t focus on gender.

The government recently released de-identified data on 3M Australians. The medicare and pharmaceutical benefits data is an incredibly rich resource for us.
