Online Self‑Harm Education & Support Group
For Parents and Carers of Children and Young People Who Self‑Harm
The Hope4U Online Self‑Harm Education & Support Group is a safe, confidential, and professionally facilitated space for parents, carers, and guardians supporting a child or young person who is self‑harming.
This group recognises the fear, confusion, grief, exhaustion, and isolation many carers experience. You do not need to have all the answers—this group is about learning, connection, and being supported without judgement.
Purpose of the Group
• To help carers better understand self‑harm in children and adolescents
• To reduce shame, stigma, and isolation for families
• To strengthen carers’ confidence, coping skills, and emotional wellbeing
• To support safer, more compassionate responses at home
• To ensure carers are supported while supporting others

---

Who the Group Is For
• Parents, foster carers, kinship carers, grandparents, and guardians
• Carers of children or young people who are:
• Currently self‑harming
• At risk of self‑harm
• In recovery from self‑harm
This group is for carers only. It is not a group for children or young people.

Early signs don’t always scream “crisis”; they whisper, then sometimes shout. Recognizing these cues can prevent escalation and open pathways to help.

Mood shifts:Persistent sadness, irritability, or frequent mood swings beyond what’s typical for life events.
Energy and motivation drops: Prolonged fatigue, loss of interest in activities, or withdrawal from friends and family.
Cognition and concentration:Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
Sleep and appetite changes:Insomnia or hypersomnia, significant appetite changes, or unexpected weight changes.
Somatic clues: Unexplained aches, tension, or headaches with no medical cause.
Functioning dips: Difficulty at work, school, or in daily routines; increasing conflict in relationships.
Behavioral shifts: Risk-taking, self-isolation, or risky coping strategies (e.g., substances, self-harm).

Prevalence you can feel in your community. Mental health challenges are common. In many populations, about 1 in 5 adults experiences a mental illness in a given year, with higher lifetime prevalence for conditions like anxiety and depression. Among young people, the numbers can be even more striking, underscoring the importance of accessible support in schools and communities.

Mental Health vs. Mental Illness: The Quiet Spectrum We All Walk

When we talk about health, we rarely separate the body from the mind. Yet in conversations about mental health, a lot of confusion persists. The distinction is simpler than it sounds: everyone has mental health, just as everyone has physical health. Mental health is a continuum—ranging from thriving to struggling—while mental illness refers to diagnosable conditions that can disrupt daily life but are treatable with support.

11/12/2025

Mental health and mental illness are two terms people often use interchangeably, but they refer to different parts of the same human experience. Think of mental health as the overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being that shapes how we think, feel, and act. Mental illness, on the other hand, is a health condition that disrupts this balance—distress or impairment that may require professional support.
