Our Speech Pathologists, Hannah and Bec are attending the Speech Pathology Australia conference in Perth this week. The conference is a fabulous opportunity to learn about new research, view innovative new products and to network with other professionals.

It’s not all work though, the ladies will get to enjoy the sights of Perth and hopefully get a selfie with a quokka! 🤳

Swallowing Awareness Day was last Thursday. Whilst we missed posting on the actual day, we did take a photo during our virtual staff meeting and wanted to share it along with some bite sized facts about swallowing!

Like breathing, swallowing is essential to everyday life. Humans swallow at between 500-700 times a day, around three times an hour during sleep, once per minute while awake and even more during meals.

Around one million Australians have a swallowing difficulty. This is known as dysphasia. Swallowing problems can occur at any stage of life. However, the knowledge of dysphagia and its implications remain largely unknown for most Australians.

The muscles of the mouth, tongue and neck are used for both speech and swallowing. Speech pathologists have in depth knowledge of these muscles conditions and can help with swallowing disorders.

The NEST team attended the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network Parkinson’s Symposium in Tamworth on Saturday. Our Speech Pathologists, Bec and Hannah attended the morning education sessions and the rest of the team and our partners joined for the dinner in the evening.

Well done to all involved in bringing this fantastic, educational event to our region.
