There is a bit of a mixed bag of varieties but lots of grey factor, which I like to keep in check. Thick necks & top ends and shoulders, and they feel bulky and weighty in the hand. Usually if you see it in the nest at this stage, it is there for the rest of their lives.

What a beautiful morning for a pedal out the New England Highway. Not a cloud in the sky and a very pleasant temperature with no wind. Very easy and pleasurable push biking conditions. I always get a kick out of the notice board local country school I ride past.

It’s been a cracker of a 2025 season so far, even better than last season, which is hard to believe that is possible. Last season was double the previous one.
There are many big nests of fertile eggs and as a result loads of youngsters. It is a bit of a nice problem to have. We will run out of rings way too soon and we are struggling with finding places to put the youngsters to increase the number of chicks that survive the hatching and weaning process. When you get big nests of eggs , 10 or more, you have to be on the ball to maximise the number of chicks you get to the perch. These big numbers are I reckon are a result of targeted nutrition and keeping the birds in conditions to help them thrive.

Finally, all the sale/spare birds have exited the building. Having breeders come and see the birds and check out how they are housed and bred is so much better for the new owners and is a more social way to enjoy the hobby. Old-school buying at the aviary eliminates so much buyer purchasing remorse and disastrous breeding outcomes. I have seen many lines of birds ruined by the introduction of silly procurements.

A good spring clean and the aviary is ready for the next generation. Note the size of the aviary: 5 metres long and 2.2 metres high. Lots of fresh air and exercise are paramount for healthy, strong birds. No quail flights here.

This young lady popped out of the nest this morning. A much different feather to the few earlier bubs I have posted. She has abundant shoulder strength like the previous chicks but a much looser feather texture. Unfortunately she is an only chick from the pair, so I hope the next round is more productive.

A few normals are popping out of the nests now. All with soft feather, good feather flow and plenty of meat and potatoes in the shoulder to carry the faces I like. Breeding a number of normals each season, with no grey factor in them gives you plenty of options for future breeding. There is nothing wrong with good grey and grey greens, but I keep there use to a minimum.
