Just like a fine wine, newly distilled botanical oils need time to settle.
If you’ve ever joined one of our workshops and smelled a freshly distilled oil, you might’ve been surprised by the scent — a cacophony of base, middle, and top notes (plus everything in between) all mingled together.
This happens during the distillation process, where heat is part of the extraction process.
Once we separate the final trace of water from the oil (you'll notice a bit of water still in the beaker pictured), the oil is left to rest, usually for around three weeks, to return to its true, balanced form.
If you’re distilling at home, we encourage you to check in daily. It’s not just about knowing when your oil is ready, but also about learning the subtle shifts in its scent over time.
We’ll be sharing more about our water separation process in future content, follow Blue Moon Distillers so you don’t miss it 🌿
