This time of year we are privileged to welcome a lot if new faces to TMC! We have new medical students, interns and registrars.
Introducing one of our registrars today. Many if you will have seen him before as he grew up in the valley and he has been placed in the valley as a student and as an intern in the past. We are very excited to welcome back Dr Hamish Fielke
MBBS!

Born and raised in Tanunda before moving to the Adelaide hills for secondary school and University, Hamish is back in Tanunda to continue his passion of working in rural General Practice.

Graduating from The University of Adelaide in 2023, Hamish has been working in the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills and enjoys the rural lifestyle. He is particularly interested in chronic disease management, emergency medicine, mental health and loves the variety that rural general practice provides.

Outside of Medicine he loves all things sport, particularly Footy, Formula 1 and American Football.

The New Year can be a great time to consider a health reset. But 2026 isn't about quick fixes and fad diets, it's about making small but important changes that you can actually stick to!

Eating well, limiting alcohol and being physically active (however you are able) are habits that will help you feel healthier and reduce your cancer risk.

✨ But how best to do this? Start small and build from there. Small changes add up and mean you're less likely to give up because it's all too hard.

As you will be aware, Wednesday 21st January is the Tour Down Under. While we are open as usual, access to the medical center may be difficult at times during the day. If you have an appointment it may be better to change this to a phone consultation if possible. We hope you all enjoy the race!

Heat exhaustion vs heat stroke – do you know the difference?

Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of water and/or salt contained in sweat. It can be treated by cooling down the body’s temperature by resting in a cool place, taking a cool shower, or drinking water.

When left untreated, heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke, which is a life-threatening emergency. If you notice yourself or someone displaying symptoms, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

If you are experiencing heatstroke, here’s what to do while waiting for help to arrive.

If the person is unconscious:
• Lay them on their side in the recovery position and check they can breathe properly.
• Perform CPR if needed.

If the person is conscious:
• Do not give them aspirin or paracetamol.
• Move them to a cool area and keep them still.
• Give them small sips of fluid.
• Cool them down with cold water or cool packs.

🎉 2001 babies, say hi to 25 this year – and your first cervical screening!

If you:
✅ Have a cervix, and
✅ Have ever had sexual contact with another person (regardless of gender or sexual identity)

… it’s time to get screened when you turn 25.

Cervical screening checks for HPV, the most common cause of cervical cancer. Most people with HPV don’t have symptoms, which is why screening is so important.

You can have your sample taken by a healthcare provider using a speculum, or you can collect it yourself using a swab. Both are safe and accurate.

When 25 hits, makes sure to book it in – it only takes a few minutes!

Thinking about having kids one day?

The impact of va**ng on male fertility isn’t fully known yet but that doesn’t mean it’s harmless. Vapes contain hundreds of chemicals, some known to damage DNA and affect s***m health, much like to***co smoke.

Va**ng might be marketed as “safer” than smoking, but safer doesn’t mean safe. Anything that harms your health can also affect your fertility.

If having kids is something you want in the future, looking after your body now matters. Quitting va**ng is one way to protect it.
