After a hip replacement, it’s tempting to ditch your crutches and jump straight back into activity, but giving time for adequate recovery is key.

Early on, crutches help reduce load on your new hip, support proper walking patterns, and protect your back, knee, and other joints from compensatory movement. Gradually, as your strength and confidence improve, crutch use can be reduced safely.

When it comes to strengthening your hip muscles, Eric Huang, one of our PhysioTec Hip Physios explains that weightbearing exercises with your feet on the ground are generally more effective than lifting your leg off the ground. Exercises like squats, mini-bridges, and standing single-leg work help retrain your glutes and pelvic control, the foundation for safe and functional movement.

Avoid exercises that place unnecessary stress on your healing hip, like clamshells in the early stages. Progress slowly, under guidance, and focus on control over intensity.

🚴‍♂️ NEW BLOG: Hip Pain & Cycling

Hip or groin pain on the bike? It’s often more than “just tight hip flexors.” 👇
• Repetitive load = thousands of pedal strokes per ride
• Saddle height & position matter more than you think
• Strength + motor control are key
• Old injuries can show up when you increase volume

If your pain lingers, worsens with riding, or starts affecting walking/running — don’t ignore it.

Our sports physio Tyler explains how a physio-led bike fit at PhysioTec Physiotherapy can help you ride stronger and more comfortably, in this new blog!

🔓 Back locked up? Here’s what to do.

When a spasm hits, it can feel alarming, but most settle well with the right approach.

1️⃣ Calm it down
Don’t panic. Find a comfortable position, use heat (or ice if it was a heavy lift), and take slow, steady breaths. Avoid lying still for too long, gentle movement is better than bed rest.

2️⃣ Start moving (gently)
Short walks around the house.
Small pelvic tilts.
Gentle side bends or smooth spinal circles.
Movement reduces muscle guarding and tells your nervous system it’s safe again.

3️⃣ Fix the reason it happened
Spasms are usually a response to overload. Check your training progression, mobility, movement habits, and recovery. Build back gradually and address the weak links.

It’s not about just “unlocking” your back, it’s about making it stronger and more resilient. 💪

Labral tears in the shoulder can vary widely in type and severity.

Some, like SLAP tears, affect the top of the shoulder and are common in overhead athletes and tradespeople. Others, like Bankart lesions, often follow shoulder dislocations and can cause recurring instability. Posterior tears may occur from repetitive loading or falls, and degenerative tears develop gradually with age, often without symptoms.

Symptoms can include pain at the front, top, or back of the shoulder, clicking, catching, or popping, a sense of instability, and reduced power during overhead or throwing movements. Because every labral tear is different, accurate assessment is key to determine the type of tear and guide the safest and most effective rehab plan.

🔥 Why do acute back spasms happen?

They’re common after holidays or a break from training. You feel fresh, motivated, ready to go…
➡️ You jump back into the gym
➡️ Start a new program
➡️ Increase weights or frequency quickly
➡️ Skip proper warm-up or mobility

Your muscles and joints haven’t adapted yet, but your motivation has 😅

When your nervous system senses a threat (real or perceived), it responds by tightening the muscles around your spine to protect the area. That protective tightening is what feels like a spasm or a sudden “lock.”

And if you’ve had back pain before? Your system is often quicker to hit the protect button.

Shin splints is a general term for pain along the shin bone, but in athletes, it’s often caused by medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) — an overuse injury of the tibia.

MTSS commonly occurs in sports and activities that involve repetitive impact, such as running, jumping, or allegro in dance. Symptoms usually include exercise-induced pain along the inside or front of the shin, which can feel achy or sharp and worsens with increased loading.

Our sports physio, Eric Huang explains that early identification is important. By adjusting training load, improving strength, and addressing biomechanics, you can prevent the injury from worsening and keep performing safely.

What causes tennis elbow? 🎾

Tennis elbow often develops from repetitive wrist extension, gripping, or sudden heavy loading, like lifting heavy objects or returning to sport too quickly. It’s common in racquet sports, tool-based work, and jobs with repetitive manual tasks.

Tennis elbow most commonly affects people aged 40–60, but it can occur at any age with certain types of load and demands.

Learn more about the causes, and download our FREE 2-page resource via the linked blog.

⚡️ Back suddenly lock up out of nowhere?

An acute back spasm is when the muscles around your spine tighten quickly to protect an area that’s been under a bit too much stress.

It might be bending, lifting, twisting, ramping up gym loads too fast, poor warm-up, fatigue, or long hours sitting. And yes, sometimes it happens doing something as simple as putting on your socks 🧦

The pain can feel sharp and catching or like a deep, gripping ache.

The important part? Most back spasms aren’t serious damage. They’re a protective response to recent overload, not your back “giving out.”

12/03/2026

Jumper’s knee, or patellar tendinopathy, is a common overuse injury that affects the tendon connecting your kneecap to your shin.

It often develops in younger athletes (15–30 years), especially in sports involving jumping, squatting, running, and sudden deceleration. Pain usually occurs at the base of the kneecap and can flare during activities that load the tendon — like jumping, squatting, stairs, or prolonged sitting. Stiffness in the front of the knee is also common, especially first thing in the morning or at the start of exercise.

As our sports physio Dr Molly Connolly explains, this condition happens when the tendon is subjected to more load than it can recover from, for example after starting a new sport, returning after a break, or rapidly increasing training volume. Managing load, improving strength, and allowing adequate recovery are key to staying active and reducing pain.
