🤕 Neck-Related Headaches in Hypermobility

Did you know your neck could be the source of your headaches?

People with hypermobility often have increased movement in the joints where the head meets the neck. Rachel Crosbee explains that this can cause irritation in the soft tissues and nerves of the upper spine, leading to cervicogenic headaches, a common but often overlooked cause of head pain.

These headaches usually present as a dull ache in the back of the head or behind the eyes, and can worsen with sustained postures or fatigue.

Physiotherapy can help by:
🔹 Improving muscle control around the neck and shoulders
🔹 Reducing strain through postural training
🔹 Teaching gentle exercises to control excessive joint motion

A thorough assessment can identify whether your headaches are linked to neck instability, and guide you toward effective, lasting relief.

💃 Feeling a pinch, click, or that your hip just won’t stay “in place”?

Hip microinstability might be the hidden culprit behind those frustrating sensations many dancers describe — especially when the hip feels like it “gives way,” “slips,” or gets heavy after class.

✨ Common signs to look out for:
🔹 Pinchy pain or a brief “giving way” sensation at end-range (think high kicks, deep stretches, or maintaining balance on one leg)
🔹 Clicking that eases when you activate deep hip support
🔹 Groin ache after class that settles faster with control work
🔹 A sense of heaviness or instability when lifting your leg

If this sounds familiar, your hip might not be 'just tight' --> it could be wobbly underneath.

🤸‍♀️ Living with hypermobility? You might enjoy some of the benefits of that extra flexibility but it means you'll often need to work a little harder on maintaining good joint stability.

Conditions like hEDS and HSD also affect multiple systems in the body — not just the joints. Physiotherapy can help you manage symptoms through education, targeted exercise, pain management, pacing, and lifestyle adjustments.
As our hypermobility physio, Carl Glyde explains, early assessment and a tailored plan can help improve stability, reduce pain, and support long-term health — for both adults and children.

If you suspect you or your child may have HSD or hEDS, talk to our team at PhysioTec.

In this month’s blog, Dance Physiotherapist Carl Glyde explores Hip Microinstability in Dancers, a condition that can sneak up on flexible dancers whose beautiful lines and extreme ranges may sometimes place extra stress on the hip joint.

Carl unpacks what happens when the hip joint allows a little too much “slide” of the ball in the socket, creating irritation, discomfort, or that unsettling feeling of the hip not quite holding steady. He explains how this can develop, what symptoms to look out for, and—most importantly—how dancers can improve their stability without losing their artistry.

If you’ve ever felt a pinch, click, or “giving-way” sensation at the front of your hip, or noticed aching after long rehearsals, this blog is for you. You’ll gain insight into why these symptoms occur and learn practical strategies to protect your hips, refine your control, and keep your lines safe.

The following topics are covered:

🔹 Symptoms of Hip Microinstability
🔹 What is Hip Microinstability?
🔹 Causes of Hip Microinstability
🔹 Treatments and Exercises for Dancers
🔹 How Physios Can Help Dancers Stay Strong and Stable

🏉 Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injuries to the inner knee often occur during sport — especially contact sports like football, rugby, basketball, or skiing. They can also happen in car accidents or during twisting/pivoting movements when the foot is planted.

Pain, swelling, and feelings of instability are warning signs. As our physio, Andrew Vetter suggests, early assessment is key to proper recovery and preventing further damage.

🏃‍♀️ Hamstring pain at the sitting bone? Don’t ignore it!

Proximal hamstring tendinopathy often develops when exercise is increased too quickly, or when high-stretch activities like sprinting, lunges, or deep yoga/Pilates stretches overload the tendon. As our physio Molly explains; age, hormonal changes, and metabolic factors like high cholesterol or diabetes can also affect tendon health. Gradual progression, sensible training, and awareness of these risks are key to staying pain-free.

Check out Molly's blog for more great info on this topic!

🏋️‍♂️ What type of exercise is best as we age?

There is no one form of exercise that is perfect for everyone. Trying a balanced approach can help you start moving in the right direction, but try to include some form of resistance training, due to it's specific benefits. When you’ve tried out a few different forms of exercise you can add or subtract activities to better suit your lifestyle and needs (but aim to keep up some form of regular resistance training).

Here’s some options:
• Strength Training: Weight lifting, bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, Pilates — essential for muscles, bones, and metabolism.
• Aerobic Exercise: Walking, swimming, cycling, dancing — boosts heart and lung health.
• Balance & Mobility: Tai chi, yoga, physio-guided exercises — stay steady and independent.
• Flexibility & Stretching: Maintain range of motion and comfort.

Strength training doesn’t need a gym, simple home exercises are enough to start. Always get guidance from a physiotherapist if you’re new to resistance work or have aches and pains.
