Pretty proud of this one ☺️….

I have just completed this course ‘An introduction to Disability Advocacy’…

I been chipping away at it for a little while now. It was a disability resource unit, professional development training program, through Daru. And I really enjoyed it.

I believe disability advocacy is important because people with disabilities deserve the same rights, choices, respect, and opportunities as everyone else — and too often, they’re not given that automatically. Advocacy helps make sure their voices are heard, especially when they can’t always speak up for themselves or when systems are confusing, unfair, or inaccessible.

It’s a vague phrase for a vague kind of life.

People deserve more than being passengers in someone else’s schedule. They deserve mornings that begin with choices, days that have meaning, and evenings where they can say what they did. Not just that they were “out.”

"Out and about" sounds harmless, but it tells a story of how low our expectations can be. Let’s raise them.

Let’s help people build lives filled with friendship, belonging, and real connection. Not just outings.

That’s what the Open Future Learning module Building Friendships and Community is all about. In it, Kay Mills and a group of inspiring voices including Dave Hingsburger, Lynda Kahn, Patti Scott, and others show us how to move beyond busy schedules and toward relationships that matter. This module helps us understand not only why friendship and community are vital, but how to make them happen and keep them alive.

Because being “out and about” isn’t enough.
Being known, missed, and loved - that’s the goal.

Hey guys 👋🏼 …
So sharing this seems fitting given its invisible disabilities week (19-25th Oct).

According to national data, 90% of the 4.4 million Australians living with a disability have an invisible disability.

These can include physical, sensory, mental, or neurological conditions that are not visible from the outside and can significantly impact a person's life

Because these disabilities are often not visible, individuals with invisible disabilities may face challenges in receiving support or having their needs understood.

Given this, you can imagine how happy I was to see this sign on the door of an Accessible toilet ‘not every disability is visible’ …. It was in a toilet in Geelong and was the first of its kind that I have seen. We often receive ‘looks’ or comments because others don’t recognise invisible disabilities.

If this week brings nothing more than awareness it will be a win 🫶🏽

What a great dinner tonight at KIARA ..
This woman and i cooked dinner for 11 people, we had two BBQs on the go and we cooked up a storm. Was great to catch up with everyone with lots of laughs shared. What’s better than a Sunday bbq? A Sunday bbq with good company 🫶🏽
