It's live online this weekend.
Just finished watching first lecture of 2020 Su***de Prevention Summit
- How do Australian Adults Help Their Family and Friends Who Are Thinking About Su***de
by Dr Angela Nicholas.
Takeaways for me are
DO -
* LISTEN, LISTEN, LISTEN to the person with care and support, talk about how they are feeling and ask how you can help.
DO
* take a su***de prevention course - you don't know when someone you love may need it.
DO
* look out for warning signs - verbal signs of language about feeling "helpless" or "stuck" or non-verbal signs of behavioural changes.
DON'T
* minimise the person's feelings, tell them all the good things they have to live for, try to solve their problems, say how it will hurt others or that it is morally wrong.
DON'T
* believe the myth that people who make suicidal threats rarely kill themselves - this is NOT true.
DON'T
* think you will make things worse if you try to help.
