In yoga, santosha means contentment and acceptance, and it is the second of the Niyamas (internal disciplines) in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. It involves finding peace and joy by appreciating what you have in the present moment, rather than striving for more, and accepting yourself and your circumstances without judgment.
Key aspects of santosha
Complete contentment: The term comes from the Sanskrit words sam ("completely") and tosha ("contentment"), meaning "complete contentment".
Detachment from desire: It's about detaching from the constant striving for external things or achievements as the source of happiness.
Acceptance: It involves accepting life's joys and disappointments, and accepting yourself as you are, without self-criticism.
Inner peace: The practice leads to a more positive relationship with yourself, resulting in a sense of peace and supreme happiness that is not dependent on external factors.
Self-love: Santosha encourages you to appreciate your own "awesomeness" and what you already have, instead of waiting for external validation.
Mindfulness: It involves being mindful of the present moment and accepting the feelings and experiences that arise during your practice without judgment.
