Hey folks,
It’s been a hell of a time. Tonight is a beautiful fundraiser to raise $$ for people and families affected by the floods.

There will be lush music, tasty organic food donated by and lovingly handmade, and an incredible auction with tons of amazing art and healing sessions, including one naturopathic session with me 💚💚

☀️ Summer Solstice ☀️

The longest day of the year. Spent the day bottling ginger beer, straining tinctures, making herbal oils and gathering St Johns wort in the late afternoon sun, all topped off by a slow blissful swim in the waters of the Birrarung.

Feeling imbued with a deep inner glow, the ripe fruit of 2 months spent prioritising rest and restoration, over hustle and productivity.

It’s been a time folks, and continues to be. My wish for you is many small moments of joy amidst the tumbling of the world. My wish for you and your loved ones is a safe, nourishing, & connected summer - or winter if you are in the north ❄️

Often forget to drink water? 💦

Even a slight water deficit can contribute to the intensity of period pain, thanks in large part to an important hormone called vasopressin!

Vasopressin activates & ‘presses in’ on your blood vessels when the water content of your blood drops, in order to reduce blood flow & preserve that precious H2O.

This drop in blood flow can have a big effect on the muscles of the uterus, leading to increased contraction, spasm, & pain during those most tender of times 🩸😫

One study in a group of 18-30 year olds with dysmenorrhea (period pain) showed that increasing water intake from 2L daily over 2 cycles resulted in measurable decreases in pain & reliance on painkillers.

Healing interventions sometimes are really just as simple as drinking more water!

To boost your water intake, try:
🧊Drinking a big glass or two of water first thing in the morning (I like mine with ACV or ginger)
🧊Always carrying a reusable water bottle (or in winter, thermos of tea!)
🧊Set hourly reminders on your phone, & drink a glass each time
🧊Keep a pitcher or bottle of lemon or sparkling water in the fridge
🧊Squeeze/ add slices of lemon, lime or orange for added yum 🍊

As a fertility awareness educator, it would be silly of me to let Natural Family Planning Awareness Week slip by without spruiking the absolute bloody genius and life changing nature of learning NFP!

Fertility Awareness Based Methods are a more modern term describing this family of practices that use bio markers or knowledge of fertility to avoid pregnancy or aid conception.

As listed in the slides, the Symptothermal Method (the one I teach 😏) has the highest studied efficacy rates, but different methods will be appropriate for different folks!

The Billing’s Method, for example, is taught in many developing nations around the world where literacy rates are low and poverty is highly prevalent. This method only requires monitoring ones cervical mucus, and therefore literacy is not needed and it has no ongoing costs.

The most important thing is finding a method that will work for YOU.

The tide of folks wanting to know more about their bodies and options for non-hormonal contraception are rising 🌊🌊

The first in a series where I’ll be exploring each in depth.

Though the recipe for good health can seem pretty simple - whole food nutrition, plentiful movement, quality sleep, & mental well being- there are hidden or less obvious factors that can play a big role in hormonal and overall health.

In addition to building up the supportive pillars that sustain health, addressing underlying root causes is key in the holistic naturopathic approach to re-establishing balance ⚖️

😂 Anyone else?

Honestly 90% of the time I love and look forward to my morning walks - they energise & enliven me, wake up my body & mind, and offer me a precious daily window of connection to nature, to the plants and birds and land around me.

I know them to be a pillar of my mental, emotional, physical & spiritual health.

10% of the time though.. I reeeeally *CBF*. For whatever reason (underslept, grumpy, insert other reasons here), I resist and procrastinate and faff around the house before (usually) putting on my runners and big girl hat and dragging myself outside.

And then, of course, every. damn. time. - I am SO glad I did. (See aforementioned reasons).

Regular movement is one of the 🏛Five Pillars🏛 of hormonal & overall physical & mental health.

I’m working on a blog series at the moment where I’ll be exploring each of the pillars in depth, and how missing out just 1 or 2 of them can seriously mess with the stability of your health, and leave your hormones wonky AF 😵‍💫

I’ll be also exploring the five ☠️Period Poisons ☠️ - the sneaky culprits that may be affecting your health & your hormones in subtle & trickier-to-identify ways!
