Cracked heels this summer? Our Podiatrist Abe explains why it happens and how to fix it 👣☀️
When you swap your closed shoes for sandals, slides, or go barefoot more often, it can lead to cracked heels. This happens because the skin around your heels gets dry, thickened, and less elastic, making it prone to splitting under pressure.
Why do cracked heels happen?
✅ Open-back shoes expose skin to more air and friction
✅ Hot, dry weather strips moisture from the skin
✅ Standing on hard floors for long periods can build pressure on your heels
✅ Callus build-up increases pressure and can lead to fissures
✅ Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or diabetes can make you more prone to cracking
Why you shouldn’t ignore cracked heels:
Cracks can become painful, bleed, or even get infected, especially for those with diabetes or poor circulation. Keeping them healthy is key for comfort and avoiding complications.
How to care for your cracked heels at home:
✨ Soak your feet in warm water (10-15 mins) to soften thick skin.
✨ Moisturise daily with a rich foot cream (look for urea, lanolin or shea butter) right after you shower.
✨ Avoid harsh exfoliation like pumice stones or foot graters - these can damage your skin.
✨ Wear supportive footwear like Archies Thongs & Slides to reduce pressure and dryness.
✨ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water - your skin will thank you!
When to see a Podiatrist:
If you’re dealing with painful cracks, thick callus, or ongoing dryness, it might be time for professional care. We can safely remove callus, treat cracks, and help with any underlying issues affecting your feet.
Healthy heels = comfy steps in your favourite summer shoes 🌼
