Last August I attended this great course by Paul who I went to uni with. Paul presents this information to neurosurgeons and is well respected. Back pain with spasms, catching type pain on movement and pain with sustained postures like standing, sitting are signs of poor neuromuscular spinal stabilisation. If this persists it predisposes to increased strain and injury to discs, joints and muscles. I learnt reliable and accurate assessment techniques and how to help patients really master 'deep' core stabilisation exercises and to tailor them to the individual and its great to see improved early and mid term outcomes for patients.

Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury can affect athletes at all levels of sport from the part-time recreational athlete through to the full-time professional. This injury can also occur through falls, motor vehicle accidents and other knocks to the head.
Last night I attended The Sports Concussion and CTE Symposium in Geelong, hosted by the Geelong Sports Medicine Clinic.
Some amazing presenters discussed the evidence-based information on concussion and its management, as well as potential long term consequences such as CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy).
10-20% of people with concussion experience prolonged post-concussion symptoms (PPCS). An Osteopath may be able to assist with symptoms of persistent neck pain/stiffness, as part of a patient's health care team. Specialist concussion trained physios/sports physicians at Geelong Sports Medicine Clinic can also guide your recovery from other persistent symptoms such as
troubles with vision, balance, cognition, mood and autonomic function (regulating heart rate and blood pressure).
For more information on CTE, look up www.brainbank.org.au and consider becoming a brain donor to help further this important research.

I recently attended this very interesting course on assisting women with common symptoms following breast cancer treatment. Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women, with 1 in 7 women diagnosed with some form in Australia. While survival rates are continuing to improve as well as surgical methods, many women experience lingering breast tenderness, texture changes of the breast eg hardening, fibrotic tissue and restricted motion of the breast, underarm and shoulder region. The course presenter has been working within hospitals in Sydney and has been able to assist with improving these symptoms, often significantly so using gentle Osteopathic manual techniques. Teaching patients exercises and self massage methods is also very useful. Contact the Timboon Medical Clinic or visit www.timboonosteo.com.au if you have any questions or would like to make an appointment.

Would anyone like to join me in riding (either 30km or 50km) on 31st March in Melbourne to help raise money for Multiple Sclerosis?! There is also a run option and you get to see the view as you go over the West Gate Bridge. My family and I will doing the ride together. Money raised goes to support and education for patients and carers (including funding for nursing, occupational therapy and other allied health practitioners to assist people with MS).
