Cardiac arrest is an electrical failure of the heart, and it is different from a heart attack, which is caused by a blockage in blood flow. While a heart attack can sometimes lead to cardiac arrest, they are not the same.
Key fact:
Survival rates for cardiac arrest outside of a hospital are low, at around 10 per cent. However, if CPR and an AED are used within the first few minutes, survival can increase significantly.
What should you do if someone is having a cardiac arrest?
• Call emergency services immediately
• Start CPR straight away. Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest
• If an AED is available, use it as soon as possible and follow the instructions
• Continue CPR until help arrives
Every second counts. Acting quickly can save a life.
Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference for your family, friends, and the wider community.
