Movement variability is a hot topic at the moment. The go too phrase to fix an athlete's problems. But what does that actually mean?

In one camp, you should maximise variability to ensure your clients stay injury free.

In the other camp, you should increase specificity to improve performance.

Both are grounded in logic and both have truth to them.

What does the research say?

The data shows a strong relationship between injury and pain free individuals, and an increase in movement options for the same task. And conversely, people in pain utilise the same reduced number of options for the same task. So movement variability is a thing! But how do we feed this info into our training without derailing performance goals?

It comes down to how you frame it.

Movement variability is not simply a last minute addition to a program, like sprinkling on a condiment, or throwing in a couple of heel elevated goblet squats. It's an indicator. An indicator that the program has an optimal balance between performance/specificity and variation of joint positions.

Its an indicator for where your body is currently, and how its dealing with the stresses you're placing on it. So Incorporate variation within your training, ensure you maintain joint movements outside of your given sport BUT consistently analyse this between blocks/training periods to ensure you're in the sweet spot.... Just ensure variation is not getting in the way of the performance goals or vice versa.

Does running wear out your knees?

This is a common myth, perpetuated by an old model of healthcare.

The same model that tells you squats are bad for your knees, or that deadlifting will break your back.

*But like most things we come across, it depends on the context and the Dosage!

Our bodies are products of what we do with them. Our connective tissues, organs, bones, all respond and adapt to the stimulus we expose them too. Even our brains. This relationship between adaptation and stimulus is essential to growth.

Our cartilage and joints are no different.

Do nothing with them, they will deteriorate. Give them too much, it may be a problem.

Running is no different. Its good for you and your joint health. It may even improve it in the right dosage.

But the extreme ends of it (like any sport) could increase your risk.

Does a weak core cause back pain?

Simple answer: it could. But always, there's more to it.

Research 25 years ago made everyone obsesses with core, and thus it became the only thing.

Having a weak as Puss core probably doesn't help things. And research does show changes in core muscles in people with back pain. But its usually not the only thing that weakens.

Take a look at the full picture, it's all about context. Their full trunk, hips and legs, can all be contributing factors to whether someone gets back issues. Let alone training and lifestyle factors, which is a whole other aspect (and arguably more important).

Specific muscles can matter, but don’t forget to zoom out, look at everything in context and see the bigger picture of the person as a whole system rather than just segments.

Our Story

Performance and Rehabilitation Centre

Effectus Physio was born out of the desire to see the standard raised in healthcare. For Physiotherapists to offer the highest quality care available. We wanted to set a standard that focused on achieving long term results and instilled self-management, not continued endless treatment. The name Effectus is derived from the Latin word for Performance, inscribing our desire for all to achieve their best performance: whether that be on a sporting field, in your hobbies on the weekend, or day to day function. We believe everyone should be striving to perform to their best.
