✨ Blessing of the Hands ✨

Last month, we held a Blessing of the Hands ceremony - a gentle, reflective ritual that honoured the many ways our hands contribute to caring for and serving others across our hospital community. 🤲💜

It offered a moment of pause, appreciation, and encouragement, reminding all who support patients, families and colleagues of the sacredness of their work, especially during times of stress or emotional challenge.

We were grateful to share this moment of support and reflection with our amazing staff and volunteers. 💜

Today marks 18 years since the National Apology was made to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed and displaced from their families, communities and culture. These children are known as the Stolen Generations.

The National Apology was a historic acknowledgement by the Australian Government of the trauma and grief caused by past government laws, policies and practices of assimilation.

UnitingCare's reconciliation journey is underpinned by the acknowledgement and apology by the Uniting Church in its contribution to these past wrongs - evident in the Church's 1994 Covenant with the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and 1996 formal Apology to the Stolen Generations, as well as an ongoing commitment to advocate and seek justice, healing and reconciliation.

The Wesley Hospital is proudly part of UnitingCare.

Hey Queenslanders, it's hot! Here’s a reminder of our top tips to help you stay cool and keep well on these hot summer days.

Please stay safe and remember to keep an eye out for your loved ones, mates and elderly neighbours.

💧 Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Remember young children and babies are at greater risk of dehydration than adults.

👒 Stay indoors or seek out the shade whenever you can. Wear a hat, sunscreen and loose-fitting clothing.

🧐 Keep an eye out for elderly neighbours and family members and check in with them daily.

❄️ Use air conditioners if you’re able to, and encourage your elderly loved ones to switch theirs on too if they have one.

💦 Cool showers, or a water spray bottle and a fan, are excellent ways to cool down.

🏃‍♀️ Limit outdoor activities such as exercise and gardening during hot weather, or plan these activities for cooler parts of the day.

🏊‍♂️ Swim between the flags and always supervise children around water, including pools, dams and at the beach.

🍎 Make sure young children are eating and drinking normally, and if not, try using an electrolyte drink to help maintain their hydration. Be aware that kids can also dehydrate more rapidly if they are sick.

🍷 Ensure food is properly refrigerated and avoid drinking alcohol which can cause more rapid dehydration.

Keep an eye out for heat stroke warning signs such as high body temperature, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, confusion and nausea, and seek medical attention or call triple zero (000) immediately if you develop these symptoms.

If you need us in an emergency, we're here for you 24/7 at Wesley Emergency Centre. For more info, visit https://bit.ly/3C5eqYm

A warm welcome to our newest UnitingCare Clinical School students. 💜

We host 60 medical students at any one time across our four UnitingCare hospitals - The Wesley Hospital, St Andrew's War Memorial Hospital, Buderim Private Hospital, and St Stephen's Hospital.

Our students, who hail from universities all around the world (including Australia), are preparing for a career in medical practice, and become junior members of a patient's extended health team.

They are learning assessment and management of patients, and experiencing first-hand the daily routine and practice of medicine.

We are excited to announce a remarkable achievement by our Clinical Informatics team – Brooke, Andrew, Julianne and Annie have successfully attained CHIA (Certified Health Informatician Australasia) certification! 🤝

This milestone follows three months of dedicated study and preparation, showcasing the team’s commitment to excellence in digital health.

The Clinical Informatics team work across our four UnitingCare Hospitals to bridge clinical practice and digital systems, ensuring technology enhances care rather than disrupts it.

CHIA, managed by the Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH), is a prestigious credentialing program that formally recognises knowledge and skills in health informatics. It demonstrates broad expertise in principles, concepts and methods, and the ability to apply these effectively in real-world healthcare settings.

Our Clinical Informatics team is among the very few in Australia where every Clinical Informatician in the team holds CHIA certification. This positions us as leaders in advancing safe, effective and innovative digital health practices.

Maintaining CHIA certification signifies ongoing professional development and ensures our team remains at the forefront of health informatics, equipped to deliver high-quality outcomes across diverse practice settings.

Congratulations to our Clinical Informatics team for setting a new benchmark in digital health capability! 🙌
