Migraine is a very common and complex inherited neurological disorder of sensory processing.
The brain processes things in a different way compared to those who don’t suffer from migraine. Migraine attacks are the flare ups or episodes which involve a combination of neurological symptoms eg. severe headache, sensitivity to light, noise, smells, nausea or vomiting, and in some cases, weakness, numbness, dizziness or problems with vision. Migraine attacks can be experienced once every few years or be more frequent and can be quite debilitating.
You cannot cure migraine, but it can be managed once you find the right combination of medications and tools that work for you.
Managing migraine well requires three things:
1. Lifestyle changes: Get enough sleep, eat well, avoid alcohol and other changes to your diet or environment.
2. Acute treatment: There are a range of medications and other tools you can use, eg. ice packs, hot showers, sleep, rest in a dark, quiet space, to help relieve the symptoms.
3. Preventive treatment: If you experience more than 3 migraine affected days per month, talk to your doctor about trying preventive medications.
For most people, migraine can be managed effectively by your GP without the need for specialists or tests. If you suffer from migraine, book an appointment with one of our GPs who are here to help.
