Visualisation is super effective at reducing our levels of stress and taking our mind and body to a more positive place.

Studies of brain patterns have shown that similar parts of the brain are activated whether we are physically taking action or simply visualising the action... think athletes visualising their event and their brain is responding as though they are actually taking part in the event. Emotions, muscles, the whole body is involved in visualisation.

So next time you want to bring some calmness or happiness into your life, visualise a scene that evokes that emotion in you. Is it a beach, a forest, a recent holiday, an event that made you feel good. Whatever it is, give it a try and see what happens!

Feeling overwhelmed? It is a very common feeling for many people today. Multiple demands on our time and focus, causing us to feel like we need to work harder.
Instead of pushing yourself beyond your limits, try these strategies.

1. Take time to figure out what is overwhelming you. Ask yourself what tasks, if they were completed, would alleviate this pressure I am feeling?

2. Set boundaries on your time....remember, working harder is not the answer. The opposite is true...slow it down. Say no, stick to your work hours, and take self care time to replenish your energy and focus. Fill your cup!

3. Break down those tasks that are overwhelming you into small manageable tasks over time. Write down your plan and stick to it.

4. Delegate or ask for help. Sometimes, we just won't be able to manage a task on our own. Ask friends, colleagues, pay for a service to complete part of the task. Don't go it alone!

5. Challenge the pressure you are placing on yourself... are you being realistic in what you are expecting of yourself? Is there a part of you seeking perfection? Know when good is good enough and ask yourself if more time on the task is really beneficial?

Overthinking is a common experience for many and worsens with stress

There are a few strategies that can help you get your overthinking back in check.

#1. Be aware of what aspects of your situation you can control and make a plan of how to take action. If you can't control it, let it go.

#2. Check that your thoughts reflect the facts of the situation, not a negative or anxiety driven narrative

#3. Try some mindfulness skills - box breathing, 5 senses mindfulness, simply taking time in nature or with a loved one or pet.

#4. Shift your focus and your attention onto another topic. Give someone a hand, get involved in an activity you enjoy.

#5. Schedule a time to reflect on your concerns and consciously work through what you can do about them. Don't let them take over your every waking hour.

It is time to update your story. To be the person you are in the present. We all grow up gaining knowledge about ourselves from our environment and those around us. But relying on these beliefs and perceptions as our absolute truth, forever.....doesn't make sense and is not helpful to our self esteem and mental wellbeing. Plus they become self perpetuating.
Take 5 minutes to write a description of yourself right now. Your character traits, the kind of person you believe yourself to be. If any of the 'facts' you have written down don't resonate with you, are negative and in fact are holding you back....then let them go. Challenge them, Reframe them, accept that was the 'old you'. It is time to move forward!

With our busy lives we have become focused on multitasking to manage those never-ending 'to do' lists.

However, what impact is this having on our mental health?

Stress, anxiety, overwhelm, overstimulation. It is counter-productive to our productivity levels and has negative impacts on our wellbeing.

Studies have also shown that it doesn't help us achieve more, as we are less focused and our brain requires more time to shift between multiple tasks. It is more likely to lead to mistakes and we are less likely to retain information.

So slow down (especially when you feel pressured to go faster) and focus on one thing at a time. It aligns with a healthy mindset of mindfulness and has positive benefits on our mental health and productivity.
