The Trump administration has made highly controversial claims about the causes of autism and ADHD, asserting that paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) use during pregnancy increases the risk of children being diagnosed as neurodivergent.

RANZCOG joins leading clinicians and scientists worldwide in rejecting these claims. Scientific evidence shows no link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism or ADHD during childhood, with several large and reliable studies directly contradicting the administration’s statement.

The causes of neurodivergence are incompletely understood and remain complex, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Earlier studies raising concerns about paracetamol could not determine whether the medicine itself was responsible, or whether other factors explained the association.

A much larger and stronger study, published in 2024 by Ahlqvist and colleagues, looked at 2.5 million children in Sweden. When they accounted for important factors like family history of autism/ADHD and sibling comparisons, they found no link between paracetamol use during pregnancy and children developing autism or ADHD.

The use of medications during pregnancy should always balance the potential benefits against any potential harms - both of the medication and of the condition being treated - to the mother and the fetus. The Ahlqvist study provides conclusive evidence that paracetamol use during pregnancy does not increase the chance of neurodivergence in the offspring and therefore should be considered safe to use in pregnancy where there is a clear reason to do so.

People who are uncertain about medication use in pregnancy should discuss this with their doctor or midwife.

Cindy is the amazing creator of KindHer Threads! If you are looking for a styling session for yourself or girlfriends this is a wonderful way benefit but also benefit someone in need. Alternatively if you have any clothes in your wardrobe that are gently loved and maybe looking for a new home, please feel free to drop them to our clinic to support this wonderful new Not for Profit Organisation.

✨ KindHer Threads was born from a simple idea: fashion should lift women up, not weigh them down. ✨

Hi, I'm Cindy. Founder of KindHer Threads.

For close to 15 years, I worked as an allied health professional across government, non-government, schools, and private practice. In 2022, just before getting married, I stepped away from the profession and found myself asking: what’s next?

I’ve always had a keen interest in fashion—but I didn’t just want fashion for fashion’s sake. I wanted to combine the skills and knowledge I used to support women in my professional role with creating a space where fashion becomes a positive, confidence-building experience.

That vision grew into KindHer Threads—a place where women from all walks of life can feel seen, celebrated, and supported.

Since moving from Brisbane to Toowoomba over a year ago with my husband and our dog, the welcome I’ve received from the community has been incredible. I’m so excited to welcome and spoil each and every one of you with a styling experience that goes far beyond clothes—it’s about confidence, kindness, and community. 💛

My style philosophy? Wear what makes you feel good. Fashion should be a place for fun and expression rather than rules and trends. 🌈

Here’s to building community, uplifting women, and reminding each other that getting dressed can feel good again. 🌸
