We've had a gorgeous OT join our team, so thought Cody was the perfect candidate to be next in our 'Meet the Team' introductions. Let's hear a little more about Cody...

Favourite thing about being an OT?
I love being apart of a family and child's journey to achieve goals and milestones that maybe they never thought possible! I also value creating a safe space where they can be their authentic selves!

Favourite game?
Definitely Uno No Mercy for older kiddos. It targets so many different skills, however I fear my kids beat me all the time. For my younger kiddos, definitely playing with a Lycra tunnel or pop the pirate!

Favourite childhood movie?
This is a tricky one I would have to say 'Cat in the Hat'. I have seen it too many times to count!

Next in our ‘Meet the Team’ series is Sarah! Let's have a deeper dive into what Sarah loves about being an Occupational Therapist after 18 years!

Favourite thing about being a OT?
Helping kids (and families) see that their scary stuff isn’t so scary after all and watching them see their strengths and joy.

Favourite game to play in a session?
Pop up pirate for younger clients, and Greed for older ones. The teens really love that one!

Favourite childhood movie?
The Little Mermaid. I’m still dreaming of my mer-life.

OT Week is our annual celebration of the extraordinary impact occupational therapists make every day.

This year’s theme, Occupational Therapy in Action, invites us to highlight the creativity, problem-solving, and compassion at the heart of OT practice.

Very fitting to have some of our OT team furthering their ever evolving skills at a 2-day training today, learning how to coach clients through the process of working towards their goals with the hope to scaffold the development of more autonomous problem-solving skills they can translate to other future goals independently.

And how amazing are the smiles on their faces when they master a skill, knowing they can do it all in their own 🥹

Being an OT means lots of things, but building skills in the children we support has to be up there with one of the most amazing parts of what we do.

Next in our new ‘Meet the Team’ series is Keeley! Let's get to know a bit more about one of our awesome Speech Pathologists 😄

Favourite thing about being a SP?
I love discovering the many ways clients communicate beyond spoken words, and the absolute joy on their faces when you understand what they’re expressing!

Favourite game to play in a session?
UNO Flip - although it brings out my extreme competitive side.

Favourite childhood movie?
Meet the Robinsons

“Getting Ready for School – Therapist Tips for Parents!”

Starting school is such an exciting milestone — but it can also feel a little overwhelming (for kids and parents!).

Here are a few therapist-approved tips to help your child feel confident, capable and calm when they start school next year:

🧠 Build independence early
Practise opening lunchboxes, managing zips, toileting, washing hands, and packing their bag. These small wins build confidence!

💬 Strengthen communication
Encourage your child to ask for help, tell you about their day, and express emotions using words — it helps them feel heard and understood at school.

✏️ Develop fine motor skills
Play with playdough, draw, cut, build with blocks, or squeeze pegs — all of these strengthen little hands for writing and cutting tasks.

🤝 Practise social play
Model sharing, taking turns, and joining in games. Practising these skills in a safe, supportive way helps kids feel more comfortable with peers.

🪑 Work on attention and listening
Try short games like “Simon Says” or story time with simple instructions to help build listening and focus for classroom learning.

💛 Celebrate effort, not perfection!
School readiness isn’t about being able to read or write before Prep — it’s about being ready to learn and feeling secure enough to try.

Each child’s journey looks different, and that’s okay.

If your child could use a little extra support, our Ready, Set, School! group therapy program helps children build confidence across all these areas in a fun, play-based environment led by OTs and Speech Pathologists.

We’re proud to have been ranked 5th in the 2025 Best Workplaces™ in Healthcare & Social Assistance today - Australia wide!

Once again, this recognition is a reflection of our incredible team — their care, dedication, and teamwork not only make Flying Start the best place to work, but allow the team to be their best for the families we support.

A huge thank you as well to our leaders who work so hard behind the scenes to create a culture where people feel supported, valued, and proud to come to work every day. We’re lucky to be part of something so special.

Get to know Shelby, one of our amazing Occupational Therapists, the first in our new ‘Meet the Team’ series!
1. Favourite thing about being an OT: When we (therapist and young person) find out what helps them engage the best; whether it is being in the gym and moving while chatting, creating something together, fiddling with something while we talk, mind maps, helping someone choose their own goals or playing out scenarios.
2. Favourite game to play in a session: Uno reverse (but only if I am winning) or What Do You Meme (edited kids version I have made)
3. Favourite childhood movie: Home Alone but specifically the one I had taped from the TV that also included the ‘I just want milk that tastes like real milk’ ad.

Holiday Groups are in full swing!

With lots of new faces around the clinic, it’s important our clients feel safe - to greet others or not - in the way that works for them. We celebrate neurodiversity and honour all ways of communicating. A nod, a gesture, or simply being present can be a meaningful hello.

Every child’s way of connecting is valued.

Research shows that children learn best through play, it’s one of the most powerful ways to support their overall development. It may look like 100 rounds of Pop Up Pirate… but every game is actually building cause-and-effect understanding, turn-taking, language, fine motor skills, attention, memory, problem-solving, and social-emotional skills! Play isn’t just fun, it’s how children learn, practice, and grow.
