For decades we’ve been conditioned to think about food mostly in terms of numbers, calories, portions, restriction.

But the body doesn’t simply see food as fuel.

🔆It reads food as information.

Every bite we take sends signals throughout the body that influence our digestion, hormones, energy, mood and ability to heal.

Today many people are experiencing gut dysbiosis, digestive issues, bloating and inflammation. In these cases, the body often needs something very different from restriction.

Weston Price was talking about this almost 100 years ago.

Today, tooth decay is still the most common chronic disease on the planet despite modern hygiene. So something doesn’t add up.

Price observed that traditional cultures eating real, nutrient-dense foods had strong jaws and very little tooth decay. Plenty of fish, meat, fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, sunlight. As soon as white flour, sugar, and ultra-processed foods entered the picture, cavities followed.

Tooth decay is not a fluoride deficiency.
And it’s rarely just a brushing problem.

It’s often a nutrient problem.
When the diet shifts, the teeth follow.

Enamel is living tissue. It depends on minerals, fat-soluble vitamins, and proper metabolic function. Remove those inputs, and the system weakens. Add refined flour and sugar, and the balance tips toward decay.

Our recent GAPS Diet Food Pyramid (see our pinned post!) was such a success that we decided to make one for the GAPS Lifestyle. After all, GAPS is not just about the food we consume, but also how we live our day-to-day life.

The GAPS lifestyle is about so much more than just what is on your plate. It is a whole-body approach to supporting gut health, restoring balance, and creating habits that support healing.

At the foundation are real, nourishing foods, locally sourced whole foods, quality animal proteins, healthy fats, meat stock, fermented foods, and simple cooking techniques that make nutrients easier to digest and absorb. Seasonal eating and traditional preparation methods are a big part of how this way of living supports the gut.

But the lifestyle does not stop with food. Sleep, circadian rhythm, movement, breathwork, time in nature, and sunlight all support the nervous system and digestion. Reducing toxic exposures through cleaner home and hygiene products and supporting the body’s natural detox pathways can also make a meaningful difference.

Community, connection, and stress management are other important layers. When the body feels safe and supported, digestion and healing can happen more efficiently.

At the top of it all is consistency over perfection. Small choices are made daily, nourishing meals, getting outside, managing stress, prioritizing rest, and creating the foundation for lasting gut health.

Making another recipe from the GAPS Diet book, these are GAPS-friendly Meatballs, and they are so simple but incredibly nourishing. The GAPS Diet (Gut and Psychology/Physiology Syndrome) was created by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride and is a healing protocol focused on removing inflammatory foods and slowly rebuilding the gut lining through elimination and strategic reintroduction. It’s the exact style of eating I personally used to heal my gut, and it played a huge role in helping me calm my Lyme symptoms and get my health back on track.

What I love about GAPS is that it’s centered around real, nutrient-dense foods that support digestion, things like slow-cooked meats, broth-based meals, animal fats, and fermented foods to help restore balance in the microbiome.
