“Changing the narrative on su***de”

Su***de is a major public health challenge, claiming the lives of more than 720 000 people every year. Each life lost has profound social, emotional, and economic consequences, deeply affecting families, friends, workplaces, and entire communities around the world.

The triennial theme for World Su***de Prevention Day (2024–2026) is “Changing the Narrative on Su***de”. This theme calls on us all to challenge harmful myths, reduce stigma, and foster open, compassionate conversations about su***de. It is about shifting from silence and misunderstanding to openness, empathy, and support — creating environments where people feel able to speak up and seek help.

Changing the narrative also means driving systemic change. It calls for su***de prevention and mental health to be a priority in public policy, urging governments and institutions to take action. This includes developing and implementing evidence-based strategies, improving access to quality care, and ensuring that those in distress receive the support they need.

World Su***de Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 by the International Association for Su***de Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organization. Each year, on 10 September, WSPD focuses global attention on su***de prevention, uniting communities, organizations, and governments with the shared belief that su***des are preventable.

It's the chant no one wants to hear! 🦟

As we move into the warmer months, summer sport begins, but so does mosquito season. And the mozzies are match fit!

⁣Mozzies in Queensland can carry serious diseases, such as Ross River Virus, Barmah Forest Virus, Japanese Encephalitis Virus and dengue.

Some of these diseases can cause long lasting symptoms or require medical assistance.⁣ That's why it's important to protect yourself whether you're enjoying the great outdoors at a sporting match, or just at home.

The best way to avoid mozzie bites is to:⁣
🦟 Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
👕 Wear loose-fitted, light-coloured clothing and covered footwear.
♨️ Use mosquito coils outdoors.
🏠 Remove breeding sites from your home (empty items that hold water, keep lawns mowed, drain and fill pools of water).

If you've been bitten by a mozzie and are worried about any symptoms you may have, please see your doctor as soon as possible.
