So you've got jaw pain, and want to know what to expect for your first Physiotherapy appointment-this post is for you!

In a physio assessment, we’re looking at many factors:
• How your jaw moves (opening, closing, side-to-side)
• Whether there’s clicking, locking, or pain
• Muscle tension in the jaw, face, and neck
• Your neck mobility and posture
• Habits like clenching, grinding, or chewing patterns

Why does this matter?
Because jaw pain is often influenced by more than just the joint itself.

Depending on what’s driving your symptoms, treatment might include:
• Hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension
• Exercises to improve jaw control and movement
• Neck treatment (because it’s often involved)
• Dry needling (if indicated) around the jaw muscles, neck and shoulders
• Education around load (e.g. chewing, talking, gym habits)
• Strategies to reduce clenching or grinding

Why does my jaw hurt? 🤔

Jaw pain is often linked to your Tempero-Mandibular Joint (jaw joint).

It can show up as:
• Clicking or popping
• Pain with chewing or yawning
• Headaches or earaches
• Stiffness or locking

Common causes 👇
• Clenching or grinding
• Muscle tension-from your jaw or neck
• Poor posture
• Overuse (gum, hard foods)
• Joint irritation or injury at the jaw joint itself

Good news: you don’t have to live with it.
Physio can help reduce pain, improve movement, and manage flare-ups.

If it’s not settling, get it checked early ✔️

Going through peri, meno or postmenopause and not sure what you should be doing?
🏋️‍♀️ Strength training is the number one non negotiable during this phase of life.
Why: estrogen drops → muscle mass, bone density, and tendon health all decline.
Aim for 2–3 sessions/week, 3x10-12 of each, focusing on:
Squats / sit-to-stands
Deadlifts or hip hinges
Step-ups or lunges
Push-ups or chest press
Rows
These are just some of the examples of exercises great for menopause.
Stay tuned as a new group exercise class is coming to the clinic that focuses on this population!

Menopause, hormones & pain-what’s the link?

If you’ve noticed more aches, injuries, or slower recovery during perimenopause or menopause, it’s not just “getting older”.

As estrogen levels fluctuate and decline, it can affect:
• Tendon and ligament health → reduced collagen support meaning your body is more presdisposed to tendinopathies and ligamental injuries
• Muscle recovery → longer soreness, more fatigue
• Joint lubrication → increased stiffness and pain
• Pain sensitivity → the nervous system can become more reactive

This is why some women experience new or recurring injuries, tendon pain, or joint discomfort during this stage of life-even with the same training load.

💡For some women, seeing a women’s health–focused GP to discuss hormonal changes, and whether estrogen therapy may be appropriate-can make a meaningful difference to pain, recovery, and overall musculoskeletal health. It’s not for everyone, but it’s a conversation worth having.

💪 The good news?
With the right strength training, load management, recovery strategies and medical support when indicated, you can stay strong, active, and confident in your body through menopause and beyond.

Stay tuned as we are planning a new group class focused on this population!
