So you've got jaw pain, and want to know what to expect for your first Physiotherapy appointment-this post is for you!
In a physio assessment, we’re looking at many factors:
• How your jaw moves (opening, closing, side-to-side)
• Whether there’s clicking, locking, or pain
• Muscle tension in the jaw, face, and neck
• Your neck mobility and posture
• Habits like clenching, grinding, or chewing patterns
Why does this matter?
Because jaw pain is often influenced by more than just the joint itself.
Depending on what’s driving your symptoms, treatment might include:
• Hands-on therapy to reduce muscle tension
• Exercises to improve jaw control and movement
• Neck treatment (because it’s often involved)
• Dry needling (if indicated) around the jaw muscles, neck and shoulders
• Education around load (e.g. chewing, talking, gym habits)
• Strategies to reduce clenching or grinding
